Trick wiring for 5.0L Holden engine/knock sensor

Trick wiring for 5.0L Holden engine/knock sensor
I have a HSV chip for my 5.0L engine out of a VQ statesman.
Obviously the engine has no knock sensor($200 to buy one) so my engine warning light is always on whinging that it can't find a knock sensor.
I want to put a resistor, from dick smith or something, in place of the knock sensor to trick the computer into thinking the sensor is there. I was hoping somebody might know the resistance of the knock sensor(i expect it to be quite high as i beleive it works off voltage from a peizo electric cell) and if anyone had the computer/engine wiring diagram for a early 90's HSV.
Thanks for your time.

You should run a knock sensor with the HSV settings, as it will be prone to knocking more.
Call me on 0418 393 408 on Monday and I will get you a price on one, and the wiring harness if you don't already have one.

putting a resisor in place of the knock sensor will not work, the sensor puts out a voltage when knock is sensed, it's not variable resistance.
I would highley recomend using the knock sensor if it is meant to have one because there is a good chance that if a code is logged the ECU will be retarding the timing to a safe level, therefore loosing power and economy.
If the holden ECU doesn't do this (late model electronics do to protect the engine) then there is a good chance that you will get knock which can destroy the engine.
$200 may sound expensive but can be cheaper in the long run.

HMMM This is a perplexing question
$200 for a new knock senor , a few cents for a resistor to bluff the computor or $3000 to replace a detonated engine because the knock sensor is not there to tell the computor that the timing is too far advanced

Take 77F1004wd's advice... Go to wreckers.. purchase second hand knock sensor.. Fit sensor to engine... problem solved!
You should be running one regardless of HSV chip or not. The sensor will only do it's job when detonation is detected, any detonation is bad and therefore the only thing you have to gain from not fitting one is a much lighter wallet to ease the burden on your back pocket..
Cheers

Only HSV and V6 chips have the knock filter fitted to them, to be able to use the sensorRuffy wrote: You should be running one regardless of HSV chip or not.

A knock sensor without the HSV chip, is just a plug in the waterjacket of the block.

If you have the provision to run a knock sensor, why not run it. I used to work for holden. And as a mechanic, why not run a sensor if you can. As already said, why let an engine detonate if it has a provision to stop this. Better in the long run to do the job properly than risk it.

Thanks for your concern about my engine and my long term costs. I appreciate it, but most of you are assuming too much and have missed my problem all together.
I couldn't source any sensors at the wreckers when I last looked.
I need something whilst trouble shooting untill I get a sensor.
Having the thing running around knocking itself to pieces is far down the track
nah, I imagine I would've sourced a sensor by then or bought a new one as funds permit, as i can't layout that sort of money right now. what i can do right now(remembering i couldn't track down a cheap sensor...) is get a resistor equal to that of the sensor, then start trying different ideas to get it wired in so it will be right when i find/afford a sensor.
It's called time management.
Forget the resistor. I now have a sensor.
I don't have a plug in my wiring loom for it to connect to and need to go straight to the computer plug. Does anyone have a copy of the wiring diagram for early HSV(90's) or know which computer plug ports that the sensor goes to?
Or does anybody know if early HSV's didn't have a MAT or MAP sensor, as i know where they plug in and maybe the Knock sensor replaced one...
Crushu, thanks for your help on the phone
Thanks for advice blokes, but i'm not questioning the worth of a knock sensor, it's just that it's no use to me unless I can wire it in correctly

I have the ECU wiring diagrams for a VN but there's no connection for a knock sensor... I thought it was the same all the way through until the gen III came out. It gives the diagnostic code for knock sensor fault but no connection on the wiring diagram.
Let me know if you want them anyway and I'll email them through

Whilst browsing the Common-whore forums:
Here is a wiring diagram for a VN HSV:

I think the VQ would use he same gear as VN-VP models...what I can tell you is that the VN/VP computers and memcals are a different design to the VR/VS.
My VN V8 Auto took the Knock Sensor pin in B11.

Just in case this makes it into the Bible, I should clear up that VR Manual Computers are the same as VP computers. Only the VR Auto had a different spec computer and chip.
