Account of events regarding Goodyear MTR's
I purchased a set of Goodyear MTR's (305/70R16) for use on a 100 Series Rigid Axle landcruiser. The vehicle sees reasonable bush work but not nasty stuff)
At 6000km a severe vibration started - resonating at around 90 kph. It was that bad that I could feel it through the body of the car.
4 different wheel balances, both tailshaft re-balances, front wheel bearing replacement and then re-tensions, steering assessment and eventually found that it was out of round tyres.
This all happend over 1500km.
So the tyres had approx 7500 km on them.
Contacted supplier, they contacted rep and was advised they would be replaced.
Subsequently found out thet the MTR's have had issues with heat at highway speed and are 'ply seperating'.
Replaced tyres with the same spec MTR's.
Get a call from supplier asking for $485.25 for changeover replacement. Apon inquiry I was told they were cut up and only had 9mm of tread depth left. Originally starting with 15mm. That is 40% worn after 7500 KM. My tyres were not cut up nor were they that worn.
Having argued with them - not getting responses and re-contacting them over and over they finally offer to half the cost.
They still are wanting to play rough even though I have many ways of poorly advertising these tyres for them and the fact that SMB Fleet Management actually own the vehicle, along with some 85000 other cars in the country....
I am not intending on paying anything - and will approach Consumer affairs for advice.
The warning:
You will only get 18750 km out of a set of MTR's on your cruiser.
When you have trouble they will screw you over.
They don't handle the heat of highway driving (spose they are not designed for it)
They are dearer than most other brands and are less value for money - BFG's - 50000KM+, Michey Thompsons - 60000KM+, Coopers - 80000KM+

not good to hear, but remember batch issues can cause problems in all tyres, Goodyear may be playing rough, but then so do cooper or BFg or .... most of the reportsI got ast the rosehill from guys with STTs are saying they are getting 20 to 30k out of them until totaly bald road use only, cooper offer some discount on a new set but less than goodyear are offering you.

They have been the ultimate touring tyre for heavy trucks, and been extremely puncture resistant and wear really well for an aggressive tyre, and because they are 50% thicker in the sidewall than the cooper, and 25% thicker than the MTZ and STT cooper, [yes, i have cut them up, and measured them] with thicker denier cords, they do generate more heat on the hwy, and we do find we need to balance them more often [though still within what should normally be balanced, just most dont unless it vibrates]
Havent heard of your issue before, though im not surprised as all mass produced things have some level of come back, its just how high that determines if its good or not.
Interesting its all 4 though, sounds like they have been driven on at lower pressures than recommended, unless they are having trouble with a whole batch.

Having said that, i had heaps of k's on mine when Cossie bought em, 2x Melb - Syd and Melb - Adelaide etc, never had a problem with 33x12.5's. .. was thinking the 305's, but not now... Going 285's on the GU if I can get a good deal on them..

It was two out of the four but being a constant all wheeler I was not interested in replacement of 2 only. I have maintained correct pressures at all times - carrying a compressor for re-inflation after dirt work.
This truck does not get nasty use. I have a landrover 110 county fully locked for that stuff.
I am keen to get comments re other peoples experiences etc.
I cannot beleive that less than 20000km for a set of tyres is the norm. I have about 30% left on BFG's on the rover and they would have 50000+ km on them.
Anyway keen to guage comment

Well you must have had a bad batch and been dealing with dick...
My mtrs on my GU were the best good wear excellent on and offroad and would have got over 60k on them. these were the 315/75/16
I would persist and if its a novated lease vehicle i would get the lease company stuck into them.

Mine have 70,000k on them and still a good amount of tread depth,
simply put the best tyre I have ever owned, full time 4x4 rangie
had firends who all have had sets most went well over 60,000K on rangies and discos - best aggressive tyre in the wet and very strong in 16" load rating E thousands of Ks driving in central and western qld all day highway driving in summer fully loaded and they handle the heat fine
Will happily buy another set - never heard a complaint such as yours - but put it down to a bad run I would guess

mate i had the same problem. i bought my set for the 80 series and after i picked up the car and drove down the highway i got the vibration as well round 90kms and it was through the whole car. i took it back the next day and they re balanced them but problem still there. i was told to take the car back in a week when the rep for goodyear turned up so he could test it and that they would put new tyres on. later got a phone call and was told there was nothing wrong with it but you could clearly feel the vibration. been a mechanic i checked everything under the car just to make sure it wasnt anything else causing the problem i contacted them again and they basically told me tough luck. thats service for you. never buy another set. i had the problem right from the start.

I have been told about "casting issues" with some batches of tyres.
My brother brought a set of MTR 33/12.5/15 and while they were fitting the new tyres to the rims, the shop fitters were unable to balance one of the NEW tyres. They told my brother about this and fitted it to the spare, which they replaced as soon as a new tyre was sourced.
Since then he has had a trouble free run, and getting good life out of them.

I do remember someone having MT/R's out of round on a Hilux about two years ago (overlander forum)
After lot of trouble he got new tyres.
I'm on my second set of MT/R's in 285/75/16,and couldn't be happier.
First set lasted 40000km and was still leagal.
Second set has about 30000km on it and it won't last any less,but probobly not much longer eather.
My tyres see lot of abuse and I don't expect them to last longer anyway

At least you had nicely balanced wheels and drive shafts as well as new bearings etc You can't judge all their tires on one bad experience. On the other issue of them asking for a cash payment, I won't comment on that.

I did have issues when I first got them, but quickly found out - after asking - that I was running them at too low a pressure.
Since running them at 35-40psi, they have been awesome. Stick like shite to a blanket in the wet on road.

Well i have 265/75/16 Mtr's which have done around 20,000k and have 11mm left ( 14.7 new) and they have done heaps of off road & high speed blacktop running ( well above legal sometimes ) as well as getting lit up a fair bit on the rear. AND i couldnt be happier with them. They are a heavy case tyre and arent ever going to handle like a bridgy on road, but i have been more than happy with them.
When i got them the tyre joint told me to bring them back in after about a month for a re-balance, as they would need it, and they were dead right. after a re-balance once the case had settled they were real nice. I was getting a lot of tread squirm from new, but as the tread aged with heat and use it really settled down and even began braking nicely. I balance and rotate every 10k and these have worn real flat and even. Used the 4psi rule to find the best on road pressure and they have been spot on.
I couldnt be happier with an aggressive tread like these.

check pressure when cold, check again after a journey (when hot)- there should be 4psi difference. If more than 4psi difference the pressure is too low, if less than 4psi the pressure is too high.

By what you are saying, charging you for 2 sounds correct to me, if only 2 have had a problem, they should only be oblidged to replace 2.
Also, our customers tend to get around 60,000km + out of MTR's and a set at work off an 80 at the moment with 52000km on them have 8mm of tread left, so if yours are wearing so fast, Id say either incorrect pressures/hard use/incorrect use to be wearing so fast.

I own three sets of MTR's. Two sets for a GU and one set for a 79 series.
The tires on the 79 are for offroad use only. (Have road tires) They have completed around 30000klms. 90% offroad. Cape York, The Kimberley, Desert trips aswell as many to Cruiser Park. As for the GU, 1 road set, 1 offroad set. The GU has big suspension, Double difflocks, reduction gears and a big turbo. I regularly give it the berries with the MTR's at 18 psi. I have not experienced one problem with them. I wouldn't consider anything else.

I found that they wear quick and chip easy.

I found they where real hard to keep in balance on the Surf. Had to rebalance 4 times in just over a year. Doing about 10k -12k in that time.
They shook the Surf heaps over 100k's.
Awesome off road though, but I have just gone back to BFG's. Never had a problem with them...
