How have you mounted Amps and things that cant get wet?
How have you mounted Amps and things that cant get wet?
I want to get my car stereo out of my room and into the 4wd but I cant figure out how to mount the amps so they wont get destroyed by water and mud. Its a SWB maverick and its my everyday car so having the stereo in there would be nice.
What have you guys done?
Any ideas?

Mines a short wheel base.
The amps are roughly 30 cm by 60cm. The recovery gear gets thrown about in the cargo area quite a bit. I would hate for the tirfor to come crashing down onto one of the amps.
I was thinking about making up some type of shelving system. Maybe 2 drawers at the bottom which are approx 30cms high then have the amps mounted on top with another shelf above the amps so I can put recovery gear on top still.

I use to have my amp and sub sitting behind the drivers or passenger seat in the rear passenger footwell in my shorty. Surely you wouldnt be silly enough to try and flood your 4wd each time you go 4wding so why not just make it so your amp and sub are removable for when you decide to go do something stupid???. I used to have in my old lux the amp sitting under the seat and the subs behind the seats in an extra cab, I had water in there but it didnt do anything to the stereo so I had no complaints
Mate if you have no cargo barrier. But still have tirfor and crap floating around. Thats abit silly.
As for amps and crap. Is the music in the car have to be that high a quality. Or do you just like lots of noise.
I was always happy with a head unit upgrade. New speakers would have been nice though.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
i had my sub box in the back strapped down, (for easy removal) and my amp mounted to the back of the rear seat up high.
and yes mine is a swb. and it did fill the back up. but i could still fit my recovery gear in the back.

Thanks guys, I want better sound and to get this stuff out of my room.
The car already has a factory CD player and decent speakers but no sub at the moment. Im going to change the head unit to a DVD player that will link up to my TV screen and PS2 so I may as well put the rest of the gear in at the same time. Ive got a Kicker L7 sub and 2 amps. I dont think ill put my other speakers in. They will likely get wrecked sitting in the doors.
Mounting the amps to a panel attached to the back of the back seat sounds like an alright choice. Ill just have to be more careful loading and unloading stuff.
How did you go mounting the amps? Did you just tec screw them in? Was there any problems with passengers getting stabbed?

The whole idea is to keep the expensive stuff dry. The TV will be on top of my dash, the PS2 and invertor in the glove box and the DVD player is an in dash one.
The sub box is too small to mount an amp on.
I'd rather the amps be more permanent fixtures with the sub easily removable if I need the extra space.

the couple of times I've got my shorty stuck enough to let water in its come up to the cd player...DVD player is an in dash one.

on another note, I ripped out the rear seat and made a basic set of shelves to fit recovery gear on one side and stereo stuff on the other with some 6x9's and amp n sub, never got wet too

I'd love to rip out the back seat but the GF demands that it stays so she can come away when we go.

I put all the stuff that needs to keep dry in my wifes car, or at home in the garage. That way there is no problem.
Let me ask a bloody obvious question.... why the hell do you want to permanently fix expensive and sensitive components in a car that's gonna be filled with dust, take massive electronics damaging whacks and jolts, and get exposed to water.
I suppose it's fair enough if you're going camping and you need to pack some stuff to distract the kids, but otherwise sheesh.... just stay home and logged on to the internet and lead your virtual life instead.
We're meant to go 4wding to get out into nature, not go to a nice sunset background where mosquites can eat us while we play gran tourismo 3.

amps
I can understand if you want a good stereo for your daily driver. I have 2 amps, 1 is stuck high on the back of the sub box that is strapped down but easily removable if needed and the other is under my set. I dont intend on flooding my car but what i was going to do is place the amp still under the seat but in a plastic container as there is a heap of room under these seats. The container would have an open top for air flow. This would work most of the time when you only get a couple of cm of water in the 4wd.
One other option is to bolt it to the roof at the back somewhere. You could make it look neat and it would be totaly out of the way and never get wet.
Let me know how you go

GQII Patrol YAY!!
Thanks for all the replies, these roof mounted setups sound great, Does anyone have any photos of them?
Whats with the language anyway?
I am the kid that needs distracting on camping trips.
Camping is so boring without music.
How did you mount it all?
Got any photos?
Its been flooded twice all up. I imagine it will happen again. I dont want it to happen but when you try bigger and bigger ruts these things happen.
It would be no fun if I went around.
Yes but the navigator sits there.shakes wrote:dont you have a passenger seat?

Are you serious? Why else would I want a big stereo in my car?Beastmavster wrote:I put all the stuff that needs to keep dry in my wifes car, or at home in the garage. That way there is no problem.

The car is my daily driver and tow car, if it was a full time off road car then I wouldnt put a stereo in it. Im not putting a big stereo in my drag car for this reason.Beastmavster wrote: We're meant to go 4wding to get out into nature, not go to a nice sunset background where mosquites can eat us while we play gran tourismo 3.
This sounds great as well. I have a sunroof so the room at the front is limited but there is heaps of room at the back.coffen wrote:have you ever thought about a top shelf. My GQ has one and it runs across the roof line just behind the windscreen plenty of room for amps, cb radio & maps

I wasnt intending on flooding my car but sure enough the second time out and it was flooded. I nearly fitted both amps under both front seats the day before as well. I was lucky.Jimbo wrote:the other is under my set. I dont intend on flooding my car but what i was going to do is place the amp still under the seat but in a plastic container

How about this then ?

It mounts to the roof using sheetmetal brackets that screw into th mounting points for the grab handles, above the back doors.
Mine is a LWB but I thought it might still be ok for a SWB
It has the space to house 2-3 Amps, with the door you can see dropping down to allow easy storage in the unused space for other goodies between the amps, if you only put 2 in there.
It very rarely get dust inside as it is so far out of the way, and well sealed, however, it may be wise to put 2 12v computer type cooling fans to circulate the air inside if your Amps get too Hot.
