sierra shortages, engineering
sierra shortages, engineering
r people starting to buy vitaras because sierras are getting harder to get or have there always been a limited number of them? Another thing is how many people here have there cars fully engineered with f100 rims, i was trying to engineer a disk brake conversion and he told me that i will not be able to run them due to the small axles and the strain they will put on them. Also canyou bag engineers on here?
I guess that part of the appeal of a vitara is that they have more of the stuff people want - interior room, efi, power steer, auto available, and they are less flogged out.
Having said that, Vit's are IFS and have gearing difficulties because of the already short diff gears and direct high range. They are also "differnet"- not everyone has built one and not all of them have been built the same way.
I would avoid bagging engineers if possible and never by name... you never know who knows who, and who you might need to talk to one day... but there are some "universal" problems with engineers that are well known.
As to the F100 rims - It should be difficult to engineer an 8, especially with heavy offset like an f100 rim on a sierra. I think the maxiumum you could expect would be a seven. "Axles" is a bit of a catch all term, but yes, bearing strength etc will be the reason why 8's are not permitted. It's a lot of leverage for a car that was intended to run a 4.5 when designed. (1.0's ended up at 5.5 max)
Someone will always have an engineers for something, that doesn't mean you could get it done if you try in your state/now.
Bear in mind, the biggest tyre you will engineer on a 1.0, completely legally, will be around a 30" tyre... what 30 are you trying to engineer on an 8" rim?
Steve.

its just im trying to find a replacement 1 litre hard top 410 zook and all i seem to be seeing is vitaras and then a couple of soft tops (90 models)
i wasnt to sure about bagging the engineers for the reasons you said but i dont want anyone to be stuffed around like i did
I only want 235 75 r15 which i think is a 7" which i was told was fine.
I also started writing on here how he stuffed me around but everyone would be bored of this by now
I know i should find a 1.3 but so far for $7000 i ve only travelled 800ks so to find a one litre withs disks means i can put the engineer behind me, and play the swap game. Reason is i found a cheap 1 litre and started to play now im cutting my loses and finding a better body everything else has been rebuilt!

Re: sierra shortages, engineering
Sounds like someone is on crack. Are you talking front or rear disk conversion? Either way, that sounds like a bunch of BS to me.super zook wrote:i was trying to engineer a disk brake conversion and he told me that i will not be able to run them due to the small axles and the strain they will put on them

I think he is referring to the F100 rims.Damo wrote:Sounds like someone is on crack. Are you talking front or rear disk conversion? Got mine engineered on Eastern Wheel Works rims- F100 pattern in Victoria. Also managed dual tfc's, spoa conversion, 1.6 efi transpalnt, power steer, rear disc conversion- all engineered- np
Guess it's harder in some states than others...
P.s. Haven't been on OL for a bit- can we still attach pics or do they have to be from an external website?

-it was the front disk conversion because it had drums to begin with and i am talking about the off set of the rims not the tyres, also the whole thing with this engineer HAS been BS
about the 5 visits thing, how do you know when they are ripping you of? I still dont like the fact in SA at least you have to use one on transport sa's list.
I originally bought it because it was the first sierra i came across that was under 1k in adelaide for 6 months so i nabbed it. i thought no worries bit rough but i want a rock crawler anyway. Bu bown i soon learnt legal engine conversions, bigger diffs, big tyres, cages etc cost money that for the terrain i will consistantly drive on (nothing at all really) didnt justify. I still wanted to re build it because i have always wanted to but it soon became clear i was starting to waste money.
In comes mr engineer to crush any spirit i had left to stuff me around. Then after hes done that he tells me all is good to drive it on the road. I then get a letter from Trans SA(i was expecting it) telling me i need an inspection. I got sick of waiting on holed for 30 mins at a time so went to Trans SA and asked some questions. Some how amongst questions and answers i found that i really wasnt legally driving around in my zook! when i asked why the engineer told me i can drive when i cant he said some of engineers are crazy! what ?! so i asked what could i get charged/fined for if i was busted? answer was a reeming, with that he turned around saying get over it!!!! i got really pissed and said politly fiijjk poo. so i have a car with crap body missing everything to pass an inspection, brand spankers running gear and a grudge againest trans sa. So im writing it off as research and development and finding a car with good paint and already a 1 litre with disk brakes at the front.
sorry to blab so much but hopefully this might help some one save money and frustration in the future dealing with shit heads
