1HDT Rebuild
G'day guys, how are we going?
A few months ago my recently bought 80 series threw a big end bearing and has damaged a fair bit of the motor
after pulling it down it has to come to the following:
New crank
block bored out 20thou
new pistons and rings
same rods, 1 of them reshaped
head reco'd
pump and injectors overhauled
all up ivespent just a little over $3k which is not that badof a price
im just after a few general tips when running the turbo diesel in? highway miles or around town? do's and dont's
any info anyone has would be helpfull
cheers

when we had to get our 1HDT rebuilt (same reason) the fella at CPE (cooparoo performance and engineering) Told us to
1: DONT OVER REV IT!!!!
2: DONT make it lug around
3: Just drive it normally
But he did say the best thing we could do would be go home and get our camper trailer and take it for a run up Toowoomba range and make it work (around 2500RPM) to bed the rings in.
We did that at about 1000kms after the re-build and 150 000k's later its still good as gold, heaps of power and it doesnt burn oil

thanks for the replys guys, will remember those facts when i run her in
as for doing it so cheap, i lied in firstpost actually, injectors wernt done as thye were fine
rices as follow:
crank: $750
block bored and hoaned, rebuild kit with oversized pistons and the usuall shit done: $1200 or so
head's recod from a mate in the game: $420
pump done up: $920 northcoast diesel
then just your general shit, new belts, oil filters etc would make the $3k

Is the pump and starter etc, the same on the 1HDT to the 1HZ. I've buggered the 1HZ for the third time in my 80 and am looking at another engine, but unless I can get another toyota motor for a reasonable price, I'm going the 6.5 V8 Diseasel.

1hdft will be cheaper than a chev and alot easier to put in, and probably alot better engine.Hardcorr wrote:Is the pump and starter etc, the same on the 1HDT to the 1HZ. Most 1HDFT's are for exchange only, and are still around the 10-11K mark from the wreckers.
I've heard of them cheaper, but that's after they have been sold, mostly via mates rates. I'm still shopping around and keeping options open, and I'm in no hurry. With 2 Shorty 40's, a 60 and an 80, I'm not stuck for something to drive, and the missus has her Barina.
I've found V8 diesels for 7k, and the complete conversion will be able to be done for around 12k, by myself. Full reco'd motor is 10.5k and a new crate motor is 14k.
Drive in drive out is around 18k, but I want to do it myself as there are other things that I want to do at the same time, radiators, clutch etc.
Cheers

1hz's and 1hdt's are exactly the same motor
pump:
1hdt: 12mm plungers
1hz: 11mm plungers
injectors:
1hdt: dual springs
1hz: single
pistons have different swirl champers
i do beleive the cam is different, but saying these last 2 they come with a newmotor
everythingelse is exactly the same,1hdt has decompression plates builtintothe head gasket kit but runs same head
every other bolt on part are the same
if anyone would wish to add/correct me please do,im no expert thats just waht i have found undermy own research, thinkijg of putting a 1hz into my cruiser instead of the 1hdt

1hz is an indirect injection engine with precombustion chambers (swirl chambers as you call them?)guerd87 wrote:1hz's and 1hdt's are exactly the same motor

1hdt(1hdft 1hdfet) is a direct injection engine and has no precombustion chambers
therefore the injectors and head are completely different.
well i was wrong about that one i wasnt aware 1hz's have precombustion chambers
the swirl chambers are on the pistons, in the workshop manual they are refferred to as these, i dont know how they work or what they do, but theyre different
was going to goto a 1hz over 1hdt and turbo it
my first quotes for rebuilds were huge, was not worth the money to replace the 1hdt
after finding out that it can be done alot cheaper i stayed with 1hdt

other than turbo rebuild, maybe a bit extra to rebuild the 1hdt pump, and probably a bit extra in rebuilding the 1hdt the rebuild costs should be identicalguerd87 wrote:well i was wrong about that one i wasnt aware 1hz's have precombustion chambers

pistons will be the same if not maybe $100 dearer, crank will cost the same (crack test etc) and the block is all gonna be the same.
