Just had a guy in my workshop yesterday that had a blown zd30 in a 2001 series 111 patrol 16000 repair bill I put him on to the right people in nissan to get some money back o and it only had 116,000 on the clock.

in the 3ltrs there is numerous problems
motors: mine went at 66000km and one month out of warranty, nissan came to the rescue and replaced it for me approx 18k damage.
3ltr clutches are also a problem with the dulemass flywheel.
mine snapped and whent through the bellhousing $2300 worth of damage.
this was out of my pocket nissan would not touch this one.

I have mates that have had the same problems that I have had.
I have not got a lemon they are just a sh#t car poo_trol

I have a 3.0lt 2001 series 2, its done 215,000kms and never had a spanner on it. its for sale too!

One of our customers had one hole a piston, 1999 model 10 months out of warranty. Nissan fixed it for nothing ( they said a motor alone is $12,500), but he had to kick and scream about it.

The thing is, all the ones that i have heard about blew up after a big long trip down along the highway ( his went after a 750km straight run ).

Hay anyone else come across this?

rolys blew up the first time just after breakfast in town, few klms from a few hours parked. dont know what happened the second time it blew up

Mine is a 2003 year model bought new and has done 73,000km so far with no problems. Tows a camper trailer no worries

Warranty expires November this year though. Has been serviced by local Nissan dealer whom I bought it off

our work wagon (early 01 3.0) blew piston #1 apart at 115,000 late last year, well out of warranty period.
nissan paid for the motor and we had to pay for labour to remove and replace.

The thing is, all the ones that i have heard about blew up after a big long trip down along the highway ( his went after a 750km straight run ).

I have done lot of highway km at high speed,like Perth to Sydney accross Nullarbour in three days and lot of rest(wife and kids),Alice to Halls Creek in 12 hours including visit to Wolfe Creek,Halls Creek to Broome,Broome to Perth,etc.
If they were dying due to long trips,mine would have been dead long time ago

I did a little research on these and 2003 was the date I was commonly told that the problem was fixed. Something about a different oil delivery system or something.

I will not be buying one now simply because if the worst did happen I simply couldn't afford to fix it at 16-18k :? I'm about to buy a house and that kinda cost + no vehicle would really sink my battleship :lol:

I own a series 3 gu, the only problem i have had is the air flow senser.My brother works in a dealership and has said the problem is oil supply or lack there off in the early model.He said they changed the sump and pickup because over long periods of hi speed hiway driving the oil wasn't returning fast enough. The police force in western Qld have got rid of theres because 80% failed , they went back to toyota.

My old mans got the current model 3lt in auto and I reckon it goes like a rocket....when its on boost. After driving his a fair bit I'm thinking of upgrading my v8 disco to one of the td5 versions when funds allow. I'm quite impressed with the power from such a small capacity engine. I'm still amazed at how well it pulls, feels like nothings gonna stop it.

So far he's had no problems with it bar when he tried fitting a speed correction box for the bigger tyres. It confused the auto box computer and stuck in second gear so thats now off.

A bit off topic ( if its to far off say so and I'll start a new thread), but is there any special prep thats needed with these engines for long distance touring. We're planning to do the gunbarrel later this year or next year and then a trip up to the kimberly the following year.

Even if mine never blows up ('05 GU4), I still wish I got the 4.2.
3.0 is too weak at low revs, which sucks when you're trying to crawl up steep rock steps nice and easy like

I'm hoping lower low range gears will help

My factory clutch went at 20,000 - I don't even tow anything.

i drove from syd to melbourne, parked it at 4am

next morning drove 10kms to Highpoint and it lunched itself in the carpark

hole in #4, crack in 1 2 3

i would never touch another one, the flywheel was an issue on mine AND my brothers, his cracked.

too many other issues with adler bearings, AC compressor unprotected at the bottom of the engine, mass air flow sensors failing, intercooler hose bursting

I replaced mine with a 4.2 TD6

carry a serpentine belt, idler /tension pulley for the belt and a MAF sensor.

also carry an intercooler hose as these burst often and you are screwed when they do

Article (well, the car guru answering a question - not rely an "article" as such) in today's Sunday Mail.

He said that the problem was sourced to inadequate oil delivery, and the problem was magnified on long drives as the oil didn't have sufficient time to cool. So in short, he believed that the engine had insufficient oil levels overall.

He went further to say that Nissans fix - they changed the dipstick to one where the oil level indictor was further up the stick, meaning you would put an extra 2 litres of oil in! This related to GU series 1.

I've never heard it explained that way before!

It was a 3 litre. Im fairly sure it was a 1999, but cant be sure. If i still worked there i could check his client file, but i cant.

and i bought one on pre order and picked it up the day they came out.


it lasted 2 years and 364 days, 87000 kms before blowing up for the 1st time

GU series 1 was 98- april 2000

GU series 2 came out april 2000 with the all new ZD30

even motoring journalists can;t get it right :roll:

the shorter dipstick was a band aid that didnt work, it came out sept 00, i had 15,000kms on mine at that stage. the series 3 got the new engines with imprved oil spray etc, they also came with a new ECU and loom as there were more sensors to check on the new engine

hey there's something new, a 3.0 owner who likes to blame anything but the motor for their poor pre-turbo performance :D


if I carry almost nothing in terms of cargo, it's just bearable. I do have a lot of weight on the vehicle - factory bar, dual-wheel kaymar rear bar although I only carry two wheels on camping/touring trips, dual batteries, winch, black widow storage, roof rack, dual long range tanks.

but if I'd gotten the 4.2 it wouldn't be an issue because it has at least some balls before it's turbo comes into play

thanks for all the replies in the end I bought a DX 4.2 Diesel. Now I just have to save the $$$ to get it turboed in a couple of years

3.0 is not perfect,but 4.2 isn't better
I do have lot of weight as well.
I would suggest driving 4.2 and making opinion based on your experiance,not what everybody else says

That _is_ my own experience.

The 4.2 is definitely better in the situation I described. Even the 4.2 petrol from the GQ is better than the 3.0 in that situation - another thing I've experienced myself.
