Portal Axles
Hey Guys/Girls
I am looking at getting Portal Axles for my 1989 Range Rover Classic, depending on price and build quality.
Can anyone here point me in the right direction? Maybe give me a number I can call to get more info.
I am located on the Gold Coast (Australia) any info would be of great use.
Cheers

PORTALS!!
There are some MOGS getting about, but i am not to sure if they are for sale????
As for VOLVOS try David at MANNAR 4WD park, he is not in the business of selling them but he does have them there. These are a good alternative to the Mog!
I looked at them myself but i am going down another path!
You could also PM N.A.M as he does have a set but once again i am unsure if he wants to sell them?
The only other source for MOGS that i have seen is Cheezy, he did have some advertised a couple of months ago!
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

I have heard and read that maxidrive make portals for rangie axles. don't know more than that so you might want to contact them.

I was just interested in getting a set.
I just ordered the latest 30% travel kit from rangie spares including the actual kit, springs and new longer travel bilstiens. (total $2395+post)
But still even with this kit the largest tyres i can fit are 265/75 R16's which i also purchased yesterday. ($285x5 = $1425, plain and simple BF Muds)
I just though for a later date those portals would be great to assist in fitting a set of 315/75R16 and lower my overall gear ratio as I am yet to see a gear reduction set for the Borg Warner case in the 1989 RR's.
I like 4WDing and I like the idea of being able to do anything at a good steady speed - I dont like the boot it and see how far you get method, I like tactics and good crawling ability. (maybe I shouldnt have bought a rangie )
Basically at the moment I am just curios as to the pricing of the portals and exactly how hard they are to fit and what sort of reduction they give etc.
But overall I think i will be satisfied with my RR no matter what (it took the piss out of a new GU Patrrol @ landcruiser park when i first bought it STANDARD with dud shocks and springs, I think the nissan was stock standard, might have had 2" lift and it did have the limited slip rear but still could not keep up with my so called poxy RR, I WAS PROUD ) sorry to all the late nissan owners.
Maybe i shouldnt have said anything about the nissan (I am just waiting/asking for a flaming he he ha ha )
Thanks heap guys for all your responses I have spoke with Mal at Maxi Drive but he is asking around the 12000 dollar mark for the portals........ pretty exxy

dude... put a body lift on, cut the wheel wells out and fit the bigger tyres.
there are plenty of tricks to get flex on a rangie... drilled radius arm bushes, wristed radius arms, chopped radius arms, bent rose joint pin, heim joint to replace rose joint... 5 link suspension, i'm sure there are more.
portals are a pain in the butt to install. lots of custom work required, and if you can't do it yourself, it'll cost you a fortune.
first off, get a locker!

As NAM said there are much better options than portals to do what you want. Pity you have already poured all that $$$$ into the bits you have. May have been a better option to ask a few questions before doing the mod.
As pretty much any 4wheeler will tell you, you invariably buy tyres that are too small to begin with. it is a learning experience that can unfortunately cost $$$$ to get right. My advice is ask plenty of questions, scour the bulletin boards for anything even remotely related to what you want and then do your mods. Learn from others experience and save your $$$ by doing it right first time

Thank you 2car, atleast you seem keen. (not that i will be getting portal at any time soon) for the time been I think i have taken the right step, Rangie Spares are a good reliable company and those tyres are plenty big enough for me at the moment. Until i do a much larger lift or portals those tyres are plenty and the locker is on its way.
I am gonna be cutting the guards and fitting the flares in late october and the locker will probably come around that time aswell.
As for all the other mods people have mentioned they also cost alot of money and the portals in my opinion for pure offroad use cant be beat, cause no mater what you do at the end of the day one rock directly in the centre of your path COULD stop you and with portals you may just clear it but in saying that they too are damn expensive.
cheers guys/girls i am very suprised that no one has had a go at me for baggin the nissan he he

No the 30% travel kit comes with new shock mounts, front and rear shock kickers, ball joint relocator, adjustable top shock mounts, new hightened front shock turrets, and all the brake line extensions, what else I cant remeber i had a paper with every thing detailed on it I just cant find it.
the only thing that disapoint me is I have to buy the reinforced ball joint seperately and I JUST cant afford it so i am gonna have to wait about two weeks for that. Ow and i am still looking to get the flares and that cool looking snorkel they have at rangie spares.........but once again its just more waiting......
Hopefully I can take some photos of my car as it is right now before i fit the whole kit so i can really see the diference in a photo shoot. And i might be able to get some shots on here.
