I have just completted installing a 2 H Diesel to a MWB BJ 73.
With the conversion I also used the donors gear box (60 series) which has a electric 4x4 selection.
Is someone within the forum able to explain how this all works - I have a basic understanding but I am having problems (will not engage).

On the transfer, there is a vacuum powered ram that engages the front wheels. It will have 2 thin metal pipes coming out. They look a bit like hard brake lines.
When 1 pipe is connected to vacuum and the other to open air, it will engage the front wheels. Vise versa it will disengage. This is operated by 2 solenoids that sit up near the brake booster. There will also be all the wiring in the loom for it, even if it didn't come out of the factory with it but when I had to sort mine after the rebuild, I couldn't find where the relay was supposed to go so I wired it myself.
The Hanes type manual has a wiring diagram just for that system. The transfer has a switch that automatically engages the vacuum system for low range but this doesn't work on mine anymore. Not a big problem, now I have low range 2wd if I want!!!
My hanes manual is in my car which is getting a new exhaust a.t.m. I'm away until Tues the 13th. If you can't get a copy of the wiring diagram before then, PM me and I'll scan it.

I have installed all the vacum system - I have vacumefrom the rear of the alternator and up to the two solenoids. I have a clicking noise on the solenoids when I push the button on the dash - I believe my problem may be the solenoids.
With what you have writen above - if I apply air pressure to one of the lines heading to the vacuum powered ram (gearbox) this should activate 4x4?
Hear from you soon - just trying to eliminate problems.
PS I dont think I will take on a project like this again.

The solenoind are a bit like relays, they just switch air instead of electricity. As you press the button, they will click.
If they are clicking randomly, it could be a fault in the electrics running the solenoids.
The 4wd light on the dash is connected to a sensor on the transfer case. Simply pushing the H4 button won't make it light up. It literally tells you when the front wheels are engaged so that will give you some idea of what is / isn't happening.
If you bypass the solenoids and connect the vacuum pipe from the engine directly to one of the pipes from the transfer, you will put the vehicle permenantly in 1 mode (either 4wd or 2wd)
