New Hilux Diesel - Oil Change procedure

Anyone done an Oil change themselves on the D4D yet?
Is it easy and anything to look out for?

Anyone want to give a Gumby's guide todoing it?
Would be much appreciated. I am about to do my first one as I can't keep paying Toyota to do it every 5,000KM.

I personally wouldn't do it yourself unless you can find their "special oil" that they use. Why are you servicing every 5,000 when the D4D has a 10,000 service interval anyways?

It also stuffs up your warranty if you don't get the 10,000 service stamped into the book by a registered machanic.

Yep, service intervals are every 10,000 ks but they still want u to change the oil every 5. It is not necessary to take it to Toyota to get it done either so don't worry about needing to get it stamped.

I talked about this with the Toyota mechs at my 1000 k/m check-up and they even told me what oil to use although i can't find where i wrote it down. They did metion that most of the different brands of oils surpass the minimal requirements of the D4D.

Haven't hit my 5000 yet so i can't tell u of any issues. I am going to tackle this one myself but.

Anyway, for info - I will still get the 10,000 services at Toyota (oil and filter plus other stuff) but the in between 5,000 services ( ie 25,000, 35,000 and 45,000 and so on) are oil only and I want to do myself to save money. There is not even a spot in the service manual for the 5,000 services to be stamped so its not an issue (since Toyota could not be bothered to have different service manuals for the diesel and petrol) they went the cheap option and had only 1 service manual for both engines, this does not mean the diesel can go 10,000 km between oil changes. Also - You can buy the Toyota diesel engine oil at any Toyota dealership, it comes in a yellow plastic bottle. Is this what they told you to use?

So, can anyone offer any advice on how to actually do it, possibly with pics?

Or is there such a thing as a service manual for these yet?

G'day all,

I work for Toyota Company Fleet in Altona, Melbourne and I can tell you that we use the same oil for all the cars, no matter whether they are diesel or petrol. It's a Castrol brand, not quite sure of the viscocity but I can try and find out. We get Technical Services coming in and out all the time for other stuff, like they need to check some new cars as a reference point, but we've never had any problems and been doing it for many many years.

So when you guys buy ex-demo toyota vehicles, theres a high probability its come through us and yeah, we've used Unleaded vehicle oil on it.

I know some of you may disagree with this oil, but like I said, the newer cars, and for that fact back till '96 when I started there we've always done it and even 2 of my previous diesel hiluxs received the same treatment with no problems at all.

Would be ideal to find out exactly what oil they use, from what I've heard it's very difficult to get... with these newer technology motors, is it really important to change at every 5,000 kms though?

I heard from someone, something about the new common rail injectors are cleaner burning; therefore something about the oil not getting as dirty and therefore don't need changing as often as every 5000 k's. It was mentioned the oil could be good for up to 20,000 k's :crazyeyes:
Just remember, Toyota recomends ever 5000 k's and i might be barking up the wrong tree............ where's that mechanic guy again?

havent landrover been recomending 20,000kms changes in their TD5 for a fair while???

I know the pajero DiD is a 15,000kms interval (but my mate actually takes his offroad so he does 7500 changes too)


I parked my LN106 lux next to a new one today, and had a bit of a nosy poke around....


Both dual cabs, both 4wd.

The new one is longer, wider and as tall as my LN106 with its 300,000kms old springs.

HOWEVER, my door sills are pretty much where the first crease in the door skins are! they are about 5" taller in the body work, with the sacrifice of clearance- you can look under the lowest point of mine (transfer case crossmember) and see the sills on the new one.

Interiors- no contest... mines a tractor in comparison, same with motor (3.0, 120kw DID vs 2.8, 60kw IND diesels...)

BUT offroad, i recon id take the old girl just for self preservation....

G'day all,

me agin, the bloke from toyota. I checked the oil we use and it's Toyota brand (buggered if I know who they get it from or who makes it) but the viscocity is 10W-30 that we use at work. It looks like olive oil!

Yeah the prvious bloke is pretty much on the money when he said you don't need oil changes as often on the newer diesels. Ive heard the same thing from some engineers. I reckon it all comes down to personal choice thou - how much can you afford to spend on oil. If your going to buy the highest quality oil available you might wanna keep it for 10,00kms, thou if your using a lower quality oil, you'd change it more often.

BEFORE , the computer said 9.4km per L average

AFTER , 11.1 KM per litre average


very very similar figures on a friends in Sydney aswell, i managed to get 2, one for me, one for him


both have ARB deluxe winch bar, arb lift and 31x105r15 tyres (mine BFG AT, his Cooper ST's)

there is NO 5,000km oil changes on the D4D Hilux

10,000 oil and filter only.

Read your handbook, you are throwing money away changing the oil at 5,000kms

I guess the $64,000 question, is "is the power increase worth the fuel usage increase" :?: and is your driving mix the same before and after?

Yeah but that's not a fuel increase.

I would believe that most chips available would offer more power and better fuel ecconomy ... i wonder how they achieve that?

Did the 31" tyres decrease your fuel economy when you put them on?
Which do people think is better, the BFG AT's or the Coopers ST's.....?

31" tyres wouldn't make much of a difference what so ever, from factory size to 33's might make a minor difference.

BFG AT's would be stronger than Cooper STT's, the STT's are known for seperating and tearing lugs off easily whereas BFG's have not had a problem.

Has anyone fit a cruise control to their manual Hilux? I'm in the process of negotiating a deal with Toyota, and I can NOT believe that the manual is not available with cruise.

I've heard good things about Autron cruise control, which is what Nissan fit to the Patrol... They seem to be the pick of the aftermarket cruise controls, and support things like multiple speed settings, auto clutch resume (for manuals), etc...

Any comments?

Autron is ging in mine very soon

on the question of 31's , i drove my hilux from toyota to bob jane and trading in the std tyres with 20km on them, same with my friend in sydney with his coopers

Thanks for the reply mate, I was actually considering the Coopers ST's (Suretrac), not the STT's.

The ST is 60 / 40, where the STT is 40 (on road) and 60 % off road.

I havn't heard too many complaints about the Cooper ST's. Anyone else owned a set and got any comments about the ST's ?

I have have a set and there really good had no problems with them

Hey Roly, I'm not a 4wd shop or anything like that I'm a electrician who loves his 4wdriving. Just got back from Gosford picking up my new diffs for my conversion on my 79 series. I researched it for 12-18 months before I paid out my hard earned money for a chip. I read other people's reports on this forum & others as well as the manufacturers reports. I bought the product, and was really impressed. Of course I am going to promote it over anything else. I became a distributor knowing that no-one else sells it around here. Not in it for the money. (But every little bit helps) If you know a product works & is good, it makes it easier to sell. I always buy off people's reports & real life testing, not what the brochures say. I'm also passing it on cheaper to Outer's people to try & get the word out there.

I reset the computer again this morning and did 100kms, mix of freeway, 50 60 70 80 zones.

11.5 Km per litre average :D

i cant remember exactly, way back when we bought ours they were in short supply and a 3 month wait was the norm
