What is bio-diesel

Accidently filled up with BIO-diesel the other day.
WHAT IS IT.
My 4b now smells like burnt onions. but it is going reaaly good.
I was wondering if anyone uses it or Knows anything about it.

I used to make biodiesel and just have to tell you that if you are running it make sure you change your fuel filter really regular.... It is a REALLY good cleaner and will clean out your tank and lines from soap and crap from bowser diesel..... This can cause blockages in the line and filter but dont be put off. In my opinion far superior than petrochemical diesel....

At the time didnt look at the price(was runnin out) but drove past today and .10c a litre cheaper than the other servos.
burnt up 1/2 tank so far still gettin the same kms per tank and is goin ok(been keepin an eye on the temp gauge though).
but the smell is a bit sus

You think refinded biofuel smells a bit sus.Try,as I do,running on striaght veg oil or fat.MMMM yumy The chip fat smells a fair bit going by the filthy looks from other drivers Veg oils is not to bad though.

im running on 100% biodiesel, exhaust smells like olive oil that is burning slightly in a frying pan i guess u could say, most ppl cant smell it tho

dont know how many k's i was getting on normal diesel as i just got the truck and have put bio in it straight up

anyway got 180 litres sitting in tanks in it, and ive already noticed a bit of shit thats come from the sub tank to the main tank, via a filter

edit: oh and i pay $120 a litre for the stuff

never mind the smell, its far nicer than the black death(diesel fumes) that I hope you all know gets into your body on a molecular level (through your skin!!) not just what you breath in....that said I drive my diesel MK every day spewing the shite out if they sold B100 out here I'd be on it regardless of price....and yes I have made my own but I can't keep up with production or the 38c per litre ya sposter pay Johny for the priveledge....rant over

I thought you only had to pay excise on fuel that you actually SOLD to people, not of you make it for yourself?

Its good stuff, and will soon be running it in the rangie.

You could go to any supermarket, and buy straight canola/sunflower/vegetable oil, and pour it straight into your tank, and it will run perfectly, however, cold starts can be a bit of a bugger, cause its thicker than diesel, and doesnt preheat as well. But new, its dearer than diesel, thats why people go for the old oil from fish and chip shops. Basically, all you have to do is remove all the contaminates, and pour it straight in, usually at a ratio of around 50/50 with diesel, but some run it straight, preheated with something run from the coolant system, or electric element, with a seperate diesel tank for starting and shut down.

And I think little Johnny recently made it illegal to make your own biodiesel, as he wasnt getting his cut of the excise.

One thing I just thought of, can you use any second hand cooking oil? Or does it HAVE to be veggie oil? Cause I do some cleaning for resturants and would be able to get their waste oil but they dont always use veggie oil sumtimes its just the old pig fat i think

As Bundy and coke hold the ice said.I have a 45 ltr heated tank,heated by the engine coolant water.Got it set up with a thermatic switch set to 50 degrees.when the temp is reached it switchs to bio.Flick of a switch near where you a going and it is back to diesel to flush the lines before I stop.Cost so far is for fat $50 for 200 ltrs and nothing for cottinseed oil so with processing is about 30 cents a ltr. I also run in the diesel a bit of injector cleaner to help stop the injectors coaking up.

bloke i buy my bio off has a piece of equipment you can use to heat up your fuel line, basically the engines coolant runs thru one side of the piece, and the bio runs thru the other side, it heats up the metal

i was told to keep a spare fuel filter, he had 1 guy last year have to swap fuel filters to start, because it went to thick in it due to very cold temps

Check the above link that i gave to jimpo jones. Has lot of information for everything you need. It's a bit large article but you maybe avoid some mistakes... (btw, things are not so simple -i.e. you can't use bio diesel in any fuel pump, perhaps you may do some minor modifications - you 'll find all the info there)

Do you wanna share which servo it was and what blend it was?

There used to be a dedicated BD station in Sydney apparently but it's closed down. However apparently some Volume Plus stations and others are selling a blend that varies, up to B50 (50%).

P.S. Some people seem to be confusing vegetable oil with biodiesel. Biodiesel is made from vege oil (or animal fat) but has been through chemical reactions (esterification) to make it work better in unmodified engines. In most cases no modifications at all are needed though as mentioned it will clean out your fuel system, potentialaly clogging a filter when you first start.

i'd also love to know where to purchase bio in sydney. i haven't had an email from Morris lately but the last indications were they were hopeful of re-opening the marrickville servo later in the year.

dai-hard, do yaself a favour and add a fuel filter and filter tool to your toolbox, because depending on the state of your fuel tank, bio-diesel cleans it all up and might clog your filter once or twice with gunk. it's a good idea to have one handy anyway, but especially so for bio.

There`s a servo here in Berkeley Vale selling it, about 10c / litre cheaper than regular diesel. In the last fortnight I`ve put 3 tanks fills of it. Doesn`t get the same kilometers / tank, actually almost 100ks less. Also doesn`t give my truck the same pulling power when overtaking on the freeway. So Ive gone back to regular diesel and noticed the difference straight away. I wont be buying it anymore. With the Coles discount, I`m better off with the regular juice.

It's not second rate rubbish. But I agree, it's bloody stupid of them to be basically sneaking it in there. They're just asking for another scandal like ethanol. If they put it out in the open and used it as a selling point they'd make more money, avoid a media beatup, and people like me wouldn't have to hunt around trying to figure out where to get biodiesel.

It is by no means "second rate rubbish"

In Germany and France (and most of the EU), all ULSD (ultra low sulphur diesel) has 5% biodiesel (made from new canola oil) to improve the lubricity of the fuel. I suspect this is what is happening in OZ too. So the fuel with a small percentage of biodiesel is BETTER for your pump and injectrs, because it makes up for the lack of sulphur in the fuel.
