i would first: remove your cluster and check for any dry solder joints on the back of the tacho.

Checked the Alternator connections?

Post by cookiesa »

Could be worth checking the connections on the rear of the alternator and perhaps checking the brushes don't need changing.

Had this on my disco once, one of the leads works loose which causes it. Had a BJ40 that when that was doing it. We were heading away so I wanted to replace the brushes before going and they were just about non existent.

Fixed it

Mine did that once when you talked on the CB as I had run my aerial lead through the same hole in the firewal as one of the wires to my after market electronic ignition. Moved the aeria through a hole on passenger side and no problems again until this summer. Erratic needle on tacho was due to a wire in vicinity of coil that was scotchlocked, had it soldered and problem went away.
