80 Series Front Diff Help
Hi Hope someone can help me this is my first ever post.
I own a 90 model 80 series desiel and was out last weekend doin some off roadin and all was going well
then i was doing this hill climb and i got stuck. tried applying brakes to get some traction and loud clicking came from the front of the car..
ended up going back down hill as i was trying to leave i went through some mud just to get bogged (no front drive) some more clicking later saw the front wheels spinning again and out the bog i came..
Has this happened to anyone before any ideas what my problem is,
I have 2 thoughts,
1, i have torn teeth of crown wheel
2, I have a problem with my Hubs (manual Lockers)
Please Help....

You've busted a CV. Can you hear which side it is coming from? Doubt it is the centre, when smashed, if you break teeth off the crown wheel it will jerk and make really loud bangs when under pressure and going over the broken bits.

lock it in 4wd and check which side the noise is comming from. (most likly is a cv) then strip of the hub to check.
This happend to me when I was on the highway mine was a full time 4wd then so I had to tow it

How do you take a full time 4wd out of H4????? Or do you mean when you dis-connect the CDL.if full time and you break a cv you wont have any drive when you take it out of H4
It can still be driven as it has full floating axles. Disconnect the front drive shaft and remove hub flanges so front wheels free wheel. Remove busted CV to avoid further damage and engage CDL. Drive home and repair. This happend to me when I was on the highway mine was a full time 4wd then so I had to tow it
80 series cruiser.
Claws, it is a part time 4wd not full time.
FTR80 - I had a similar problem thought it was a blown CV or the like doing a hill climb. Thought the worst. When I pulled it apart (after going all the way to the CV) I realised I had just cracked the Free Wheeling hub (fine splined section) so that it would jump over splines when too much pressure was applied. Simple fix changed hub. $50 from LandcruiserMart when I said I was from the outerlimits forum (no association, blah, blah, blah, except they keep giving me good prices.
On the down side I think I damaged the CV at the same time as it detonated not to long latter, but cannot be certain...

New cars
One thing I do with the purchase of any new second hand vehicle is replace all fluids (oils, waters, brakes fluids, PS fluid, etc, etc). Despite any service history you can never be sure.....
I also usually do the wheel bearings and hub seal kits... This usually adds a few 100 $s but at least you know where you stand....
