5.29 Supply Breakthough !!!!

5.29 Supply Breakthough !!!!
Well I've hit the jackpot all you low gear heads.
I have found a local gear importer that can (and is willing to) bring in all Mitsu 5.29 part no's. All 5.29 gearsets are available for 4 cylinder and Gen 1 3.0 V6 (all) & Gen 2 3.0 V6 (auto only) models.
Prices are about 10-20% cheaper than what Mitsu will charge me.
These gears are genuine OEM part no's supplied from Mitsu's gear cutter.
PM or email me for details.
Shipments from Japan are every 1-2 months so it's not a quick process. I may decide to stock each part no to speed up the process depending on interest.
Part no's are :-
4 cylinder (all)
front 7.25" MB185457, rear 8" MB241981
Gen 1 3.0 V6 (all)
front 8" MB241981, rear 9" MB598486
Gen 2 3.0 V6 (auto only)
front 7.25" MB831032, rear 9" MB598486
Frank.

Excellent - now I'm confused!
So the 8" front diff from a Gen 1 V6 is different from the 8" front diff in a Gen 2? I know the front axle disconnect is there, but the crown wheel and pinion are different?
And are you saying that the Gen 2 3.0 rear diff is different between auto and manual? Or is it simply a waste of time buying 5.29 for the rear of the Gen 2 3.0 manual because you can't get 5.29 for the front?
Not that I'm in the market - I'm just confused...
Cheers,
Scott

Hi Scott
the Gen2 has a high pinion front diff which has reverse cut gears .
This is reputed to be 30% stronger than a normal rear diff running on the back of the teeth in the front.
No the rear diffs on the auto and manual are the same, to get a 5.29 in the front of a gen2 V6 man you fit a gen 1 V6 man front diff.
I have only learnt all this from reading Franks excellent Tech.

Frank,
are you trying to bleed every one of us dry.
If my girlfriend ever sees you she's gunna murder you.
I'm happy with the car at the moment then you go and throw more fuel on the fire. Will have to let it pass at the moment but it's good info to know.
How was work on the weekend? - bet all you did was kick yourself that the new and improved Pooj is ready and you couldn't play.

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading
Hehe yeah I worked all farkin weekend but went to our new club meeting tonight with a mate and guess what I drove home in
Scott, Carl has nailed the differences between the diffs. A Gen 1 3.0 V6 front diff is a 8" low pinion a Gen 2 3.0 V6 5sp front diff is a 8" high pinion but the Gen 2 3.0 V6 auto has a 7.25" high pinion front diff.
Unfortunately there is no 8" high pinion 5.29.
The Gen 1 & 2 3.0 V6's all run the same 9" rear diffs.

Sounds like a new project you Frank when you've finished the 3.5ltr low range gears.
KRiS
transfer case gears only change the crawl speed when in low range. where as these are diff gears which will change the speed whether in low or hi. i.e with 29" tyres you will rev higher on the highway (and better acceleration at take off.etc) but with suitably sized tyres the revs will be kept down.
so yes, it will help with bigger tyres on and offroad...

Firstly there is a very good article on high pinion vs low pinion Tojo diffs in the current edition of 4WD Monthly.
Basically the high pinion is considered about 30% stronger rotating in the foward direction but weaker in reverse. It is a very bad idea to snatch other vehicles in reverse or reverse up steep hills with a front locker engaged. Yes the HP design allows the propshaft to sit about 2-3" higher so extra clearance is a bonus.
Having said that the Mitsu 8" HP set up is very strong as the crownwheel is very thick with huge contact area's between the C&P.
They are very rarely broken compared to say a Tojo 8" front diff.
The strength of the CV/axles doesn't really change between low or high pinion diffs as they remain the same size in the case of the Paj.
There are two HP front diffs for Gen 2 Paj's - 7.25" in NH auto's and TDI's and the 8" for all other models to the present.
The Gen 1 3.0 V6 ran a 8" low pinion design and the 2.6 ran a 7.25" low pinion. The diff centres are interchangeable between both 8" HP & LP versions likewise with the 7.25" HP & LP versions but the housings and C&P are not.

Yep, otherwise you will get drivetrain windup when you use 4wd, even offroad on tracks etc.Shorti wrote:this is going to sound really stupid... but if you change the rear diff gears do you need to change the front?
Layto....
Just between me and you, I actually really dig the Megatwon, but if anyone asks, I'm going to shitcan it as much as possible! :D
How much lower will these give you in %?
Is there much work involved changing the gear sets?
Is it cheaper to do this than changing the transfer case gears?
Might be interested as the auto has such crapy low range and also thinking of getting some simexes and putting my 32" muddies on the car as every day/camping tyres.
Cheers

Re: 5.29 Supply Breakthough !!!!
Big grave dig - but relevant to this thread
Will the internals of a 7.25" HP (5.29) front and 8" rear (5.29) fit into the housings of a 3ltr manual NJ ( 8" HP front, 9" rear) ??
Rear shafts will be different, but i have those from the locked rear.
