Squeaking noise inside cab, think its the speedo cable

Post by trains »

Hi chaps.

I have an intermittant noise that sounds like rubber squeaking, and it is related to vehicle speed, not engine rpm.
Worst around the 40 to 70km/hr mark.
It seems to be coming from around the trans tunnel shifter area.

I took the dash out, and took a few mm off the end of the cable, as we have found that the cables unwind, and push up against the speedo unit, and damage it.
I also applied some spray grease to the end of it, hoping that it would quieten it down, but its not made any difference to it.

Have others had problems like this with speedo cables ??

Edited to add that its a Ln 106 hilux dual cab

cheers

no, but if you suspect the speedo cable, why not disconnect it and go for a drive. that's what i'd do ;)

Hi HJ60,
Agree with you on that, and have isolated it to that.
I was wondering if it was a common problem that others had come across, or if it was a one off type problem, which it looks like it is.

Pilot, what may have happened to your cable, by what you describe, is the whipping of the cable, as it unwinds on itself.

Did you go genuine or an aftermarket cable to replace it with??

I have had success with oiling before to stop the needle shake...just buy adding a little at a time from the top of the cable (thin oil helps)
This may help your squeak unless it is in the instrument itself not the cable!

Hi Homer,
Yep, I tried that, and have had success before in doing so, but it didnt help this time, I think the cable is too far gone for that to help.
I thought it may have been the instrument, but the noise is coming from the middle area of the cable where it routes thru the firewall and goes under the floor.
