Any of you guys have a 55?

sounds like what ive got, there the same as what came on the 40's if that helpsSurfin Alec wrote:Had 3 55's in the family in the past. All had 7.50x16 splitties untill they got swapped for "the fatties" (31 x 10.5's)
So I would be 99.9% sure that the 7.50's are the factory gear.

it's nothing to do with measurements... QLD transport will go with the size stamped on the side... 45 punkbus, read the sidewall on those spares we gotfoodie wrote:thanks guys!
s owhen it comes to QLD transport, you are allowed 2 inches over standard on the total of the rubber/rim combined.
Can you guys measure the actual rubber on the split rim?
Thanks again,
Foodie
Spit my last breath
If you are talking about width, you can go 2" over the standard width for a 7.50x16 in the tyre and wheel standard manual (or whatever it is called). Most tyre shops should have access to this AFAIK, but I have never managed to see a copy myself. Basically that will mean you can go to a 9.5, but lots of people go higher.foodie wrote:thanks guys!

Also, as the regulations stand at present, you can go 15mm more in diameter than std. AFAIK the std. diameter for a 7.50x16 in an "offroad" tread pattern is about 32.5" but don't quote me on it.

The qld transport document says +15/-26mm from factory.foodie wrote:you are allowed 2 inches over standard on the total of the rubber/rim combined.
My 60 owners manual has 2 factory tyre sizes, one for traction and one for road tyres, 31.96" for traction tyre size.
Need to find a FJ55 owners manual to see if they give 2 measurements also.

The width can be up to 1.5 times the manufacturers widest optional tyre (for beam axle vehicles) and +15mm or -26mm in diameter according to the brochure at

Check the compliance plate in the drivers door suround. Not sure about your specific vehicle but most tojos around that era had 7.5R16 (splitties) and 10R15 as tyre options meaning you can probably argue to get away with 33" diameter, and 15" width.
Ring the RACQ, they can be quite helpful. Also, speak to your local tyre dealer as they are supposed to conform with the legalities when fitting tyres to a vehicle so they can at least tell you what is legal. Note that they don't have to conform if they simply fit the tyres to rims and you fit them yourself.

55's came with 5 1/2 inch split rims and 7.50 x 16 tyres, Roadtrak Majors to be precise.
The split rims stayed the same width right through till the 78/79 and 100 series went to 5 stud when they went out to 6" width.
There were a few changes in the actual centres over the years, the first change was when they started to fit front discs in the early 80's, then chrome versions came out in the mid 80's with the 70 series, then the offset changed for 80 series in 1990 and then the big changes with the 100 series.
