Who's fastest doesn't translate into who's best in nearly every case unless you were planning on street racing them I'd imagine
and your supposed to be talking stock V stock.. none in the OBC are stock

And most of them are unreliable POS. First sign of water and most of them crap themselves.
We had some of them barely hit the water and they stalled and wouldnt fire up. But the owners where happy to stand around the fire and brag how much money they had thrown at it. Some need to look at making there motors last the week instead of worrying so much about the dyno sheet.

Perhaps, like the big truck racing, the OBC should be speed limited.

Tough call I suppose - its a unique event and the trucks are still being refined to be the ultimate OBC fourby.

I have all the DVD's bar the latest and my impression is you cant be competitive and worry too much about wrecking the car - they thrash the sh!t out of them.

i have owned two 80 series turbos one was multi valve , and two nissan gu ,one 3lt turbo( it was shit) and one gu 4.2 turbo, having done over 1000,000km over the 4 cars. I am now a nissan man in the 4.2 but have to say the 80 series turbo is quicker. and yes they were all factory units and running 285/75/16 bfg.

Pity you cant get the 100 in a solid front end but thats another story.

From a nissan owner point of few i think the the toyota would win in a drag and after modification the same newer engine. The nissan 4.2 is like a truck engine. Nissan are tough thats why they are so popular in events. Only problem is there weight but you get that with strength. I don't think there was a factory turbo gq maybe overseas

There was a factory turbo TD42 in the GQ's. I remember reading about the Kiwis having a factorty one. And pretty sure it was a new one from a ealer not a grey import.

went to a ute show on the weekend and they had a tractor pull, pull 9 ton front end loader 50m, fastest time wins, 1GQ, 1GU, 18 yotas, with every diesel motor toyota ever made and one mog rover, gu beat them all, mog rover .1 of a second behind, closet toyota was a near new diesel toyota ute, 2seconds behind, now i don't no if this helps you but it the only way i can brag about beating the mog :finger:

Heres a question why the hell does nissan waste its time with pissy 2.8lt 3 lt motors. I know it has something to do with europe's engine size . Why don't they just get the 4.2 turbo right. More fuel efficient and faster

In Australia no Gq evr came out with a 4.2td engine so evry turbo version we see have been tuned by such a such a engine guru who knows how to tune them best. so there is such a varied base to compare to. So really like trying to compare apples and oranges.

They did make a TD GO ... that would be the later RX Turbo with the big thumping 2.8 litre turbo six. They had the factory turbo stickers on them.

When I was looking for a new bus, I saw a couple of GQ's with 4.2 factory turbo. Very late GQs though, just before GU so 97 or so.

Read an article testin gu against 100 series, Toyota left gu behind especially uphilll. Toyota had more modern engine (4 valves per cylinder). Both wer turbocharged. Gu was better offroad in 4 wheel drive. Toyota hd better on road ride and on graded surfaces. Generally, tough the better an suv on road the worse offroad and versa versa (except may be for Rangy). Also said in the article was that turbocharging for gu was light and could have used more psi. Had specs on a 91 Toyota 80 in a magazine (4.2) 0 to 60 was about 12 seconds. Remarks were 'Scorching for a diesel). Even 3.0 gu does 0 to 60 in 15 seconds
89 gq dx. bone stock --- for now.

Mates 94 FACTORY turbo TD42 GQ gets eaten by the 80 cruiser.
Although rarer, there are still quite a few turbo td42 GQ's and GU's (including the SWB GU  ) over here.

You lie... Unless the import (safari which I know you nz boys have a lot of)ones come with turbos. The GQ's delivered to australia with TD42's did not come with turbos all were NA.

From a modification perspective from Glenn Binskins ex head mechanics mouth: A td42 can handle more boost than a 4.2 80 before detonation time.. ?? soo.. you do the math ?? is this wrong ?? ...

So obviously could go quite a bit faster.... :D

Hmmmm, thought it was obvious I wouldn't be talking about oz GQ's

Winding up the boost no longer makes it a factory set up, and I thought the original question was pointed more towards factory setups, which you guys can't compare if you didn't get the turbo option....

I think Kiwi is on to something. Maybe I should widen the question a bit if we didn't get any factory 4.2L turbo's over here. I ask why not? Surely they would have been a good seller. But we better exclude the turbo's wound up to just before detination.

Cheers Guys
