Ok, I drive a 1992 Surf - If Reece says anything about Japanese 4Runner I will slash his tyres!
Since putting in the locker, etc, I have ramped up my fourbying and have started to do some panel damage. 2 'bruises' in 2 trips - each one roughly the size of a TREE just up from the rear corner. One I half pushed out and the other is right next to some damage caused during a car accident - I am going to try and sneak it past the smash repairers.
So I need to finish off my armouring of the truck before I get my rear locker and a couple of other mods I want to do in the next 6 - 12 (wife says 18) months.
So far I have a bullbar and chewed up side steps.
I am on the way to making some rock sliders - just waiting on the steel to be delivered. So that covers sills. I was not going to worry about brush bars as I have not yet damaged the front of the truck and I doubt brush bars would stop a tree anyway (everytime I see them I am sure they will bend into the truck if they hit anything as they are not supported at the likely place of impact).
But I am having trouble with the rear - where my 'bruises' are. A rear bar is being fitted when the car accident damage is fixed in 2 weeks. The rear bar goes straight across the back of the wagon with a rear wheel carrier - it does not curve around the sides where the old bumper did.
My thoughts at this stage are to get some rectagular square bar (rectangular bar?) and weld it upright with a bracket for extra stength, on either side of the rear bar. []===[]Then have a diagonal tube go from the top of that bar to a chassis mount behind the rear wheel. Another tube or 2 will go from the bottom of that bar to the same chassis mount (where the rear bumper uses to curve).
Then I can run another from the back of the sliders over the rear wheel.
Any thoughts\comments? Would it be legal ... enough? Would it be strong enough to hold the truck off the tree without itself hitting my truck? Has anyone else got a better idea?
