A couple of Quick Questions...

Post by HotAe92 »

Alrighty,

Time for less bullsh** and more action.

Just finishing up my uni exams now, and hope to do some serious hours of work, so that i can get the coily up to scratch, to be a comfortable daily driver, yet a capable enough for the weekend and occasional touring expedition.
The aim of the game is to get as many of these mods done as possible:
(in order of priority)

-Rockcrawlers
-Rear Locker
-Bullbar and spots
-1"-1.5" spring lift
-G13BB + SC12

Now i just want to clarify.
The LockRite lockers from Roadless Gear USA - would they be compatible with the rear diff of a coily (SJ80) sierra.

My plan was to import one, and have my trusty mechanic to install it (im not too mechanically minded myself) so i would be looking at around $550. I've tried to not be talked out of it by the OL guys - saying that the imports are dodgy blah blah blah. The only pro's i see getting it done at a workshop, such as OL, is that if the locker shit's itself - i can say fix it and they will warrant it.

Gears - again im not mechanically minded, so this will probably have to be a workshop job, especially with all the pissing around with the incompatible coily parts, such as swapping the transfer cases etc.
How much (roughly) do pre-1996 sierra trans. cases go for, and the gears im assuming are roughly $1500. So im guessing all up the installation will cost roughly $2000.

Damn, im gonna have to do a few hours work.
Cheers

Cheers graeme,
they made up some bullshit story that they got their's from a 'reliable' distributor. I laughed. I know they're after cash.

In regards to the rear diff, i always thought it was the same as the leafy's, but the front diff was completely different. But im more than likely wrong.

It will suck if i cant suss out an lockrite - dont particularly want to get the welder out - especially when the zook is my DD.

Cheers

Go a front locker first, more bang for your buck IMHO.

G'day,

How much have they quoted on freight to get the locker to OZ, $550 sounds cheap as I was hearing quotes of $300 for freight. I would go the rear first as driving a locked front is a pain for most of the time.

Gears should be cheaper then this. I would have thought around the 1200 mark.

the lockright will fit a coily. there was one in my old coily when I bought it.(busted so I took it out) no way freight would cost that much. they only weigh 1 or 2 kg. and are about 10x20x5 cm box as for the gearing a case from the wreckers might set you back $300 you might get it cheap $150 rebuild kit (bearing seals another $300 plus gears about $1300 $1900 alternatly you can look out for a 2nd hand Ie mud4by sold a series 4 in the case not long ago for 1300. you also need to factor in that a geardriven transfer is not a straight swap. you have to swap the jack shaft, and the front drive shaft, or maybe just the flanges,?? something along those lines. Bullbar and spots (haha you redneck)

Cheers for the reply's,

So it can be confirmed that the lockrite will fit?
I know that swapping the cases is not a direct fit, just wanted to suss out prices for parts.
As for the bullbar and spots, i do the occasional country drive at night, and i like doing night runs - and my front bumper is ready to fall off sometime soon.

I imported a detroit ez-locker from roadless gear, no problem at all, was in the rig for under $400 ( though i did install it myself, but this figure represents everything, from order, freight and even diff oil and sealand i bought). As for quaility, i would rather a detorit ez-locker than the crappy lokka ones companys try to push, have heard more drama with these than the detroit's or lock rights that have been imported. The locker was bout $175US, and freight was not that much even with insured freight.
