Workshop air jacks

Post by dogbreath_48 »

I was wondering if anyone owns or has used an air jack? Not the big baloon ones, but one like this:
Image

Selson has various models - from car's through to trucks.

Are there other designs/types available? Does anyone know how much they're worth? Most importantly are they any good to use?

I'd be looking at one just to change tyres (speed up the weekender/roadie swap) rather than recovery (slack, i know).

Any advice appreciated

Hey,

Looking through a repco catalogue i have, the model you have pictured is worth $775.

There is a small 2.5T one for $687, which is not on rollers and is moved by hand.

These are repco prices so i'm sure they can probably be found cheaper out there....

Cheers, Wasy.

We used to use them all day everyday. Very quick and easy. Last a long time too. Bags aren't cheap to replace when they do go boom, but last a fair while. The bags get thin in places over time so you know when it's time to order in another one.

Cheers,

wouldnt a decent trolley jack be just as fast - put it under the rear diff, then the front diff - probably less than 1 minute jacking for the whole tyre swap.

Don't laugh mate, I looked after a truckie that had an airspring go off while he was changing a wheel. Serious head injuries (brain swelling), fractured skull, lost his left eye (blown clear out of his skull), impaled right eye, fractured cheekbones, fractured lower jaw, "dental clearance" of upper 4 middle teeth and 2 lower teeth, profoundly deaf in both ears, and that was just his face.... Air/rubber/dirt/steel rings don't do you any favours when they let go.

I have a mate that uses a similar type thing in his workshop, he uses airbags that he gets from a truck supply place out Winfield. brand new he pays 150.00 each then mods both ends with steel as a stand, works great.

If you could give any further details, or even pics, that would be great! Or if anyone else has tips for how to construct one (the valving isn't a problem, more the rigirity side of things...).
Think i'd be using axle stands with a home made jack though ;)

I've used those jacks with my Air Up system to change tyres and general repairs when wheeling. Much easier than carrying a trolley jack and heaps faster. Still a bit scary when you jack up a whole axle at a time though....it tends to get a bit tipsy!

But it's fast!!

I have had a Selson air jack for years now, wouldn't be without it.
5 Seconds and the jack is fully inflated, beats the hell out of a trolley jack anyday. The only time I use a trolley jack now is if I don't have an air source available.

Does anyone know if there are better prices/cheaper models out there?
