Feroza engine stuffed...... =( engine options?

Post by drifta »

Hey guys,

just got some bad news from the mechanic that my feroza has some problems with the engine - its got high Ks (~300) so its probably time for it to die sometime soon..

apparently when the engine heats up oil or fumes or whatever are going into the cooling system - likely to be the head/head-gasket or something.

ive had other probs with the car, like after i did the rear main seal the mechanic said there was a tiny crack in the gearbox casing and the gearbox 'rattles' a bit.. so the mechanic is going to 'chemiweld' it for me to get it back on the road running ok and i will have to decide what to do with it..

options:
Sell the car cheaply, tell the person the engine is on the way out (because I dont want to be dodgey) $?

Get a cheap-ish SH replacement engine + gearbox

Go the Charade De-tomatsio engine replacement, and try find a decent gearbox to put behind it.

Is it possible to install the turbodiesel engine and gearbox from the rocky?? will this be any quicker or slower?

Anyone got any suggestions? anyone here done any conversions?

cheers guys

Paul

You can use the motor from an Applause, which are easier to find, but you'll still need a Feroza gearbox.

The Rocky diesel doesn't fit.. all though it'd be sweet! :D

DeTomatso are a little dearer for a small power gain.. not good if you're on a budget.

Just put in a Commodore V6  Search on it

if ya had the cash a rangie 4ltr V8 would be a sweet engine in a feroza.

Stepping to a more "realistic" option. Why not look at a Toyota 3RZ-FE, it's the 2.7L 4cyl petrol found in post 98 model Hiluxs, drop a Hilux Gearbox and Transfer (pre 98 righthand front output) in there, then you got something with more power and quite a common engine. Being a 4cyl, should slot in quite neatly aswell.

Any engine conversion will be expensive as a lot of parts will have to be fabricated. Like engine mounts, cross member, drive shafts...plus re-wiring and a lot of other problems that come up.

I have a Toyota 2.7L 4cyl and really love it. I wanted to keep the truck and not worry about getting parts. It is around 180hp with extractors, exhaust, HotWires and K&N.

The applause engine is this a front wheel drive drive job or what ?

Thinking of buying a feroza with a cracked head real cheap just to play with while i bulid my next toy.

If the applause engine is as easy as you say i might just play with that.

Thanks for the info

Yes.

I wouldn't say Applause engines are plentiful, but they'd be easier to find than the Feroza one. Just do a search as there are some minor differences and some external parts need to be swapped eg. manifolds, flywheel, sump etc.

You might be able to just pick up a head off someone on here? I remember somebody was advertising one a while back with no takers.

Why the applause engine is not at the same position as the old feroza engine was? This way the engine must be geving power on the front wheels or a modification has been done to move the rear wheels?

If you want a quick and relatively cheap repair then IMO can't go past Applause bits or engine.

Look at "Self Service" wreckers first - as whole engines are rarely bought they arn't expensive - but check under the rocker cover first. If its full of crap then the engine may be no better than what you already have.

I was lucky - scored a recently rebuilt Appluase engine for $110. It was almost a shame to strip it for bits......
