idler pulley on zd30.

Post by sajie »

Hi all,

I have a strange noise coming from the front of motor, I'm thinking it's one of the pulley's. Now i changed the fan belt today and noise is still there. I had a noise last year from the front also which was just the belt sqeuking on start up ,sprayed CRC on pulleys and fine after driving for 5 mins. The noise now is accompinied with a slight grinding sound but only when you just get going on take off(say at about 1000revs) which disappears once revs are up(around 1200 and on) and car moving .When stationary and rev it you can only just notice it, not as bad as when driven Also notice it when coming to halt.
I found the idler pulley to have a bit of play with the bearing but nothing too excessive(still spun smoothly), everything else seemed fine. Can this all change once the belt has been put on?? I have had the air-con compressor changed once under warranty, but was a different sound. If someone else has had this happen to them , then would love to hear from you. Its a 2002 with 103000km. Thx

my idler pulley went at about 20,000k's - '05 GU4. nissan promptly replaced it under warranty

I could hear it squeaking when fed a bit of gas and it ended up ceasing one day as I reversed out of my driveway. the belt burnt and snapped as a result.

glad it was in my driveway and not out in the mulga

belt tensioner

Post by sajie »

Just took the vechile to nissan and they say it's the belt tensioner. $395 they want to replace it. Does any one know if this is a job you could do yourself? $290 for the part itself

Had the same trouble @ 55000 k's,.I removed the pulley and took it to the local servo who then pressed the bearing out and matched it with an aftermarket one.Total cost $17.Hasn't missed a beat in over 15000k's.I did keep the bearing No & Brand somewhere if I can find it i'll let you know.

Hope this helps,

Nissan tried to steal my money ($375) with this too (bearing collapsed and shredded belt).
Solution was to buy the torque drive adapter for the bolt (star allen key) - I think that cost $2.50 and a new bearing $12. Make sure you get the right bearing though. The first replacement I got was purely on dimensions and didn't take into account the heat for expansion. New one all good, pity about the rest of the engine now!
2000 GU II, 6.5L Chev Diesel (ex ZD30), lift, bar+winch, rear bar, drawers, fuel tanks I need a personal loan to fill... most of the regular touring gear.
