Looking for a dd and want a ute which can easily pull a lux on a car trailer and have narrowed it down to the GQ Coil Cab or a 75 Series Cruiser
The coily has got to be more comfortable

gq utes are heaps dearer than wagons, around 20 to 24k for a decent one.
radiator mounting brackets vibrate loose but get it cleaned out and brackets resoldered.
have heard rear axle oil seals leak but never seen it.
basicaly can't kill em with a big stick.

IMO look for a petrol, the diesels are a slug (i own a naturally asthmatic wagon) and need a bit of disposable income to make them go. If you want power to tow, the petrol will give it, just at the expense of fuel economy. But then, when was this sport ever cheap? If you are set on a diesel though, look for a a pre '92 - these motors have heavier pistons in them and will handle a turbo better than later models. Also heard rumours of engine block porosity problems around the '95 models.

Go for the later model (ute) cab shape - larger 'bubble' at the back window - like starkys - has more room to put the seats back. The engine mounts will more than likely need replacing (due to age), go the genuine ones as the aftermarket ones are too hard and brittle. The genuine ones are a lot softer and compliant. The motor and box are LARGE AND HEAVY, and due the massive amounts of power and torque it's no wonder the mounts wear out after 10 years of service.

Do you know where he got it cut down? I've just been through the same process and ended up with a wagon due to cost of ute's.

guys i went and looked at the coil cab yesterday
it is a 1994, has aircon, p/s, central locking, is it and ST he says it is but has no flares and runs split rims, no decals saying ST either
has 153,000 on it, new clutch, fuel filter and battey
i took it for a drive drives well, smooth but had a squeaking noise when slowing / backing off at low speeds coming from the front
no rust, and for a undetailed rig, is quite clean, interior has a cracked door handle on the drivers side, originally sold in emrald qld
wont budge on the $21,000 - stock as a rock besides towbar and steel bull bar.
is 21,000 fair considering the age and kms and what could possibly cause that noise

Squeeking could be as simple as the bushes in the front end - panhard, radius arms.
standard - drove well otherwise though no funny businees in the g-box etc

probably just the compound of the disc pads, had some [bendix 4x4 ?] that were noisy like that or could be loose wheel bearings causing disc to rub on pads more .
