Toy cv bush

Post by 6.5 rangie »

Okay i think i have a bit of a problem. Putting my front toy converted diff in today and went to put the spindle on and then it stopped about an inch short. The brass bush won't fit on the cv, brass bush id 32.58mm, cv od 33.25 (or something like that) where the bush is supposed to sit on the cv.
Do i have the wrong cv or bush, can anyone shed some light.
Jacmac supplied the bushes with the conversion and i got the cv's secondhand (supposed to be hilux)

This is common with after market bushes(Are they in a green and white box?). They need to be machined out top fit the CV. Its the bush thats not right. The CV will be perfect. We ended up getting custom made brass bushes to do this conversion. These ones just press into a stock rover spindle with no modifications to the spindle at all.

If you are using longfields there can be some difference in the diameter of the stub where the bush sits. The two longfields we fitted to Michele's 90 had enough difference between them that one fitted straight into the rovertracks bush, the other bush we had to machine by 0.5mm or so.

Damien, you need enough clearance so the CV can turn freely, but not move up-down. About 0.1-0.2 mm should be fine.

Machined them out, they spin freely but with no slop, didn't measure it though
Thanks Damien

So, is the concensus that the spindle needs no work, just the bush?

I've been researching this conversion for a while and will do it on a 97 D90. All the writeups I've seen say the spindles need work.

Spindle still need to be bored out to let the axle through and machining so the toyota bush will fit.. The bushes that i got of Jacmac are obviously cheapies and tolerences are to tight and need a bore out aswell to suit the hilux cv.

Art, there are 2 options, toyota bushes or custom bushes (e.g. rovertracks).

Either way you (may) need to bore the spindle (as mentioned above). The conversion I did on a 97 model D90 only required one spindle to be bored (LR tolerances strike again). To fit the rovertracks bush to late model spindles you need to remove the old bush and bearing, and machine the inside face of the spindle. To fit the toyota bush you need to machine the internals of the spindle, as well as make a small steel bush.
