hey, i currently own a hilux 22r engine and finding it doesn;t have the balls when i need it. i was thinking abt doin a engine conversion but not to sure which engine to go if it they will fit, i wouldn't mind a 350 chev but dont want something that will skull my fuel hats y thinkin gas conversion down track aswell. so any help on
wat engine best for hilux?
How much cost roughly? since cant do it myself.
and best petrol or gas?

Gas is better, and a std 350 wont chew any more than the old 22r. GO figure :roll: .

And yes i own both ;)

if you cant do it yourself, look for another option. engine swaps are very expensive and all the people who have done it on this forum will agree that there is always something unexpected. depending on the engine and the initial cost of the engine. will from this forum just paid $1000 for a mechanic to weld a friggin engine mount on and wire some shit up. not at all a cheap thing in my opinion. a good 308 or 302 with not too many kays will cost around $500 carbies and stuff will be easier and cheaper to setup, EFI is a whole nother story. wiring looms can be shit and auto sparkies sometimes charge down to 50 bucks an hour for bigger jobs. ur lookin at 3 grand as a base price just for the parts and labour.

i would be thinking something more along the lines of putting a commodore v6 in and then putting a top mount blower on it engine not as heavy and if tuned right with the gas you should get close to if not more power as the 350

2nd donk $500
2nd loom $500-1000
Both from wrecker
Blower $1500 -2500
from castlemaine rod shop
Engine conversion kit $1000-2500
from marks 4wd adaptors price on that varies
depending on how much you will need for your
current model hilux and what gearbox you will be
using
Then you got to look at labour cost and engineering cost
if you want the car to be legal

Chech out the 1UZ-FE Lexus V8 aswell.

been done before (by a couple of people on here too)
can be engineered
keep it Toyota :cool:
biggest headache is the wiring apparently.

I think Twisty said his ended up costing around the 6K mark all up.

I reckon (know!) a 350 chev would haul ass.... but heavy.

commo v6 would be sweet but wiring etc makes it unviable in my opinion if you cant DIY.

maybe a smaller carbed v8, like a ford 302 or holden 253/308, thse are still quite heavy.
i have a rover in mine (carbed), its light, its only 3.5 litre and currently it hauls ass!

i also have stuff like bellhousing and other doodas you need to fit that i am happy to part with... just a thought.

I saw a hilux on thursday at a workshop that had a 400ci SB chev, predator carb, decked block etc... that thing made like 550HP apparently!!!

dunno what size it was but my borther used to have a hilux with a worked chevy small block v6 dual carbie went pritty good went though about 150L in 2 weeks though :?

Commo V6 is the go, compact and lighter than a V8 and they are pretty cheap these days. I have a carby Buick V6 that would be sweet in a lux, same as holden V6 but without efi and other electrics.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

i personnally wouldn't think it would be to hard really i did my own conversion 5.0L in patrol and found it to be straight forward i too would look at a V6 dore conversion and electrics aren't hard at all if you get adapter looms and such

Some carbys work fine offroad on all angles - e.g. the Stromberg 1.75CD fitted to most RR V8s.

I have a hilux with the 3.8 ltr V6 and turbo 700 4spd auto, great setup for on and off road and no flooding problems off road with the injection. You can pick up a complete VN commodore for $500 - $1000 and take the motor, box, and computer etc out and sell the rest.

i did one for a mate, v6+auto into a 83 lux, just brought a vp wagon out of the trader, 1500 bucks, made a profit on that after we sold parts of it. made ur own engine mounts, spaced the gearbox cross member down 25mm, brought the marks transfer adapter and loom. all up it cost around 3500 start to finish.

also how will it be power wise after gas.. still more power, so should i keep it petrol?

I slotted a Holden 308 into my Hilux using a Dellows kit, Daiken clutch kit & dessert cooler radiator.
Did it with help from my mates over a Long weekend. Not counting the cost of rebuilding the motor all up was $2800.
If you wanted to do the swap on the cheap it would pay to scour the trading post for a cheap secondhand motor for around $1000 and thats a complete running motor.
I run a Quadrajet carb/LPG setup and it works a treat. The carb set up has a Holley electric fuel pump & reg and doesn't suffer any fuel problems at all (I do a heap of off roading) but the gas lets me do steeper stuff just in case.
If your car is setup right it will be very economical as well. I went this way because I can repair /work on this setup myself.
I get on average 13.5ltrs per 100kms on fuel & 17ltrs per 100kms on gas which is better than I got out of the diesel.
The bonus I had was I sold the motor, clutch kit, exhaust etc and came out with a profit :D .
It's a sinch to do the swap and there is heaps of info on doing the swap on internet as well.

which holdens come with the th700R-n autos behind them???
also are there certain holden V6's or V8's that are better than others or not?? like series 1 and 2 or the red and blue motors???

also i see alot of holden motors being used is there any reason that ford motors dont get used as much??

i beleive its to do with the placement of the ford dizzy being at the front of the block but could be wrong

mab holden is just superior hahaha


also look into the 1uz conversion its not that much harder or more expensive and well lighter and higher power than all the other options

The 4wd 1UZ is from a crown the front diff is in the sump they are an all wheel drive (like subarus)

all the engines are very similiar, the main difference is the sump positions celsior/LS400 are front sump, crowns are mid sump, soarers are rear sump.

$2000 for a front cut then it's about right

The soarer engine is also built to develop more power than the crown 220kw vs 185kw IIRC.

if you are going to go manual you will need a crown engine unless you run an aftermarket ecu
as the crown ones have a seperate ecu for the auto no other 1uz does
and they do not like being run without it

it is easy to make the crown motors make same power as a soarer as alot of the loss is due to the smaller exhaust headers

The Soarer (pre 1997)is 191kw and the crown was only slightly less (189ish kw) due to the different header design and smaller injectors. The later model (1997 0n) VVTi was 208 Kw which is the old Japanese maximum but they are a fair bit different to the earlier model engines.

A soarer ecu can be made to run with a manual easily there is plenty of info around, lots of people have done it and had success, try looking here lextreme.com or soarercentral.com

So many people think the 1uz is an easy and cheap swap :roll: can tell you haven`t done it. Yeah it is easy if you have done it before. It isn`t cheap even if you do all the work yourself. I did all my 1uz swap myself and it still cost me between 5 and 6g.

Crown is the best half cut to get for more reasons then just the computer.
Crown is not all wheel drive.
A 1uz with the 4wd sump/diff is not all that commen, but at the same time not worth any more because of the diff/sump setup. Basicly nobody wants the sump/diff setup.
