rattle on a BJ42
Hi All
I hope somonw can help! I have substantial rattle which seems to be coming from under/near the firewall somewhere. i just came back from my fist camping trip and had to do around 300 highway km to ge there. The rattle only seems to happen when we go over successive bumps(rough road) It sounds like something is loose and it is driving me crazy. Just imagine the sound of a door rattle but about 10 times louder.
The vehicle steers well and i know suspension and uni's are ok. I think it might be something as simple as a loose mount/bracket but can't seem to locate it.
Hopefully someone who is not a newby like me might be able to suggest where to look/how to fix!
Thx all

Well I found it. It turned out to be the drive shaft between the transfer box and front diff. i filled it up with grease and it has taken some of the play out of it, but still rattles some.
Where can i pick up a reco one? Anyone recommend a place in Brissie that sells reco or new ones? What is the best option?

I take it you only got the rattle in 4x4 with the hubs out. The shaft should not rattel in 2 wheel drive as the front tail shaft will not be turning.
Is it the slip yoke thats worn or the uni joints. Uni joints can be replaced, slip yoke you will need to either get a second hand one in better condition, wreckers or eBay or have it refurbished.

Must have an awfull lot of slap to be noticed inside a FJ40 and if your not getting it in 4x4 then it may not the the problem, the slip yoke if for sure worn and needs replacing from what you have discribed, has the noise stopped since you pumped it with grease?Wilko76 wrote:I have only noticed it in 2WD. I have not noticed it in 4x4 as most of that driving is on the beach. So fairly smotth running.
The Uni's appear fine. It is is the slip joint that has the slap.
So the idea then is to locate a one in better condition?
Shop around it my be more cost effective to have it refurbished than buy a replacement.
