gq front intercooler
gq front intercooler
Anyone front mounted an intercooler to a Gq? the ones I can get are 450x300x75 or 550x300x75 with 75mm inlets. To mount it I would have to cut the grill out or mount it in front of the grill. Will this effect the radiators cooling?
What are your thoughts on this or should I just top mount one?
Its a 98 model Gq cab chassis 4.2 diesel with a Gu water cooled turbo on board.

Do you think a cooler 550x180x65 would be big enough?

Top mount intercoolers allow shorter piping from the turbo thru the intercooler and into the intake. Many people underestimate the importance of that fact. I recently witnessed a vehicle (GU III) that had its factory top mount removed and replaced with a custom front mount only to loose 2psi at the intake. Effectively made the thing untuneable. Overcoming the pressure drop in the piping to the front mount would have meant overspeeding the factory turbo. I guess failure would have resulted. As always there are extreme cases and this was one. On that vehicle with the tiny piping it was always going to be messy. Pro's and con's for both. Both have big potential done properly.

I havn't had any cooling issues yet.
With the pipeing use the same size pipe on yur turbo outlet to the cooler then the same size as the inlet size. Mine is 2 inch from the turbo to cooler then 2.5 from the cooler to the intake.
