Controls arms

Post by Jimbo »

A mate and i want to make some stronger rear control arms for both our patrols (his shorty and my lwb) We were thinking of cutting the ends off and sliding a tube with 5mm wall around it and then welding the ends back on.

What do ppl think?

What have ppl done to theirs (upper and lower)? What size tubing? How have they cut and welded everything

He wants to cut the originals in half, slide them in a tube that has holes drilled in it along the tube and the weld along the holes. i dont like that idea.

Also he still has a tailshaft vibration (shorty raised around 3 inches) and we have already spaced the T/C. How much and which control arms do you lengthen??????? We also have conflicting ideas.

Thanks in advance

has he spaced the tranmision? may need a double card. your stronger arme idea is fine, just make sure you leave te bush in so when you weld it doesnt warp the eye, then rip em out and replace with new RUBBER ones
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!

Thanks

yes we have spaced the transmision (it helped but didnt get rid of it). We dont want to get the joint at this stage if we dont have to. Cant we lengthen the lower or top arms to change diff angle?

I have heard a few ppl say 16mm. Should i lengthen my lower arms on my Gq aswell? I have a 5 to 5 inch lift on the rear and it does vibrate slightly.

Cheers

i have a 6" spring lift, and get no virbrations from the rear shaft. the gearbox crossmember is spaced down 6mm because the drop boxes bolt there. both my upper and lower arms are stock. lower have a piece of angle welded along them for strenght reasons. the rear tail shaft is also back-to-front, been turned around for clearance reasons.
maybe its not the tail shaft..
cheers Pete.

Swb vehicles with lift require 10mm or 16mm depending on the lift height on the lower arms only.

Lwb vehicles do not need this as their tail shaft is longer and more forgiving.

My vibrations are very minor but as we are maling all new arms it will be easier to make the all the same length ie 10 to 16 mm longer (on the bottom). Will it have any NEGATIVE effect on my lwb?

thanks

to be honest i dont think you will have any negatives. im runing lwb with 8" lift = 7" spring / 30mm spacer. i lowered gbox x member 30mm , modified chassis bar ( the tube behind transfer under shaft.) cut scollop out of x member so front shaft clears with articulation (cut about the size of half a cricket ball) , standard lenght rear upper arms /extend lower trail arms 15mm weld extra 30 x 30 equal angle onto lowers for slide strenght. fitted front snake arms. get no vibration apart from the sh#tty BFG tires that be on me.
