found a nh shorty v6 gls for $2500 , thinking about buying it and doing a budget build up into something wicked. dose this model have the same driveline and mechanicles as the older NG model. plus the reason it's so cheap it has some panel damage and the 4wd drive dosn't activate would this be a simple fix (something electrical?). also do these have a lsd and how well do they work?

NH was the first Australian model with Super Select, which includes a centre differential and a front axle disconnect.

The engine is essentially the same as the NG, with slightly more power. All GLS models (reportedly) had LSD, and the Mitsy LSD is one of the best - not to say they don't wear.

The 4wd problem may be simple - can you give more info? Does the transfer not move? Do the dash lights always flash? Or does everything look OK but no drive to the front?

Hmmm. Wiring. Two possible scenarios.

1. 4wd is engaging properly, but the switches don't provide proper feedback to keep the dashlights happy - who cares?

2. Dodgy wiring is creating a genuine problem. Either the switch(es) on the transfer isn't indicating 4wd is selected so the solenoids aren't switching in the front axle, or the transfer switches are doing their job and the solenoids are stuffed.

If the owner is wrong, the next possibility is the front disconnect is jammed.

I wouldn't expect any of the above to be too expensive parts wise - only time wise, which isn't an issue if you're handy. I'd suggest get all four wheels off the ground, and see what does and doesn't turn.

chears man i might go check it out tomorow, how dose the v6 manual go engine braking down hill with 31's and 33's and dose it have enough power to spin them or would i be better off putting a 3.5l in it.

as this car will only realy be a offroad car

Engine braking depends on the steepness of the hill. I reckon mine's marginal with 31s, worse with 33s - but crawlers fixed that!

Others reckon stock autos are fine, with taller first and torque converter - so go figure.

I've never been much of a wheel-spinner, but I have noticed my 33" STTs don't spin up on dirt roads too willingly.

I think it's got to be REAL bad before 2.5k isn't worth it.

yeh it's a cheap biuld up rig . acording to redbook the gls shorty dose not have a lsd can anyone comfirm this. and by putting lwb coils and shock's in back will that alow good flex aswell as lift

yep it will give you a lift as for flex, handbreak cables will limit it but you should get a bit more flex

LWB shocks are the same wength as short. Just do the springs.
Make new brackets to give more slack in H/B cables

I have a gls and its got an lsd, well im sure thats what engadged when i was going around the corner and i lost traction

it dun mater anymore i can't get it but i found out it has a factory locker in it if anyone else is interested it's on the sunshine coast.
