Engine Replacement

Post by manno74 »

Back to the 3.0L saga...

Mine has finally packed it in - after much trouble - and I'm thinking of replacing the engine with a different one all together... Has anyone replaced their 3.0L with say a 4.2 or even another brand? Not a V8... at this stage.

I am trying to weigh up the cost factor. The "3 Litre Truth" thread seemed to indicate costs of anywhere up to $20 000 for a repair, but one mention of a whole new engine for $12 500? Is this the case?

I recall seeing an article in 4x4Monthly some time back about a new motor from the states I think... Not too sure on details, but I do recal thinking it looked like a good piece of work - couldn't justify it then though!

I've spent too much on the car - and besides, it's all good - it's just the engine that shits me! Any ideas guys?

Convert 3.0L to 4.2L?

Post by manno74 »

Thanks for the tip. Due to other commitments (work) I won't even be able to start on it until December at best! But it gives me an idea on price.

Has anyone else converted from 3.0L to 4.2L? My idea is to get the best value money I can on the 4.2, rebuild it and then some... including an intercooler. What work can be done when rebuilding a 4.2 to give it a little extra without impinging on it's current strength?

Forgot to add the question about gearbox. Will the standard fit hold up? Have heard a rumour of some problems...? My unit has been great so far, but with more power on it's way...

Also checked out Brunswick... I am now leaning towards the Chev fit! Pending approval from the boss of course - but we're currently in the US and she is getting used to vehicles of the ridiculously large variety, so it's looking good!

You will need to use the 4.2 litre box with the motor. The 3 l box will not bolt up. Dont forget the wait of the chev diesel and parts and repairs compared to the 4.2. If you put a 4.2 in you will not be disapointed as long as you buy one with a turbo already. Keep checking ebay there are some real bargains. I wouldnt worry about getting the 4.2 motor rebuilt before you put it in they usually go for 500 000km's easily.

Its a GU. So uses the same gearbox. Just some of teh ratios might be slightly different. 5th gears are the same thought I think.

just an idea :!: have you looked at the auctions for wrecks :?: my mate picked up an 80seires for $500 it had been in a roll ova and came with 2'inch lift sprigs and body a 4.2turbo diesel with 33" tyres his is stock atm momentbut for $500.oo his 4b is going to be mad. i think he is using the seats out of it as well coz his are torn
(the cluster has 180,000km's which is about 80,000km's lest than the one he has now) he will have 2 spare axles gerarbox and transfer selling them will get him well more that $500.oo back. maybe use it to take the "boss" away for having a wreck in her yard, just to sweaten the deal (or for all the beer needed to get your mates motivated) just a though
