so i scored this vb sl/e for $250 and i want to check out motor it has!
the v8 part is simple. how do i tell a 253 and 308 apart. forget what car it came out of say i had one of each side by side, what would the difference be between them.

Usually you can't see the 253 or the 308 cast into the side of the block as the exhaust manifolds are in the way.
If it is a red motor and has a 2 barell carb it is a 253. 308 were 4 barrell.
Blue engines were all 4 barrells.
Easiet way to tell is to check the 2nd letter of the engine number.
Engine number is on a pad at the front passenger side where the head meets the block.
If the engine number is is EG. VR----- it is a 253 , or VT------ is a 308
This is also true for HQ - WB engines , eg. QR = 253, QT = 308
