sd33t ticking
sd33t ticking
argghhhh - you guys must be sick of me hey.
Now the patrol has started ticking :(
I did a search - ticking is necesarily really bad...RIGHT? :(
My exhaust has been chopped with angle grinder under the passenger seat - so the flange would be taking all the pipes weight...
The tick is easiest to hear from just under the front left wheel arch (exhaust manifold side)
Im hoping its an exhaust leak as it is most prominent when you are at low revs and taking off....its a really shit noise!
I topped up the oil - no change. Pod isnt blocked at all.
Advice / ideas appreciated.
Cheers,
Cody

If the ticking is more noticeable away from the vehicle, then it's probable you just have an exhaust leak - the ticking you hear is the exhaust valves slamming shut - and yes, it's very much more noticeable at take off, as the revs increase, it's more difficult to hear the ticking noise.
Would be an idea to clamp the exhaust up somewhere other than the manifold when it's repaired. 'zorst leak should be fairly easy to spot in a diesel ... soot everywhere! The turbo typically takes out a lot of the ticking noise, so it's likely that the leak is either between the manifold and head or exhaust flange and turbine inlet flange.
Tappet noise is evident by listening to the tappet cover and is more pronounced when directly over the motor. And tappet noise isn't particularly catastrophic ...
Big end noise is worse at higher revs, and keeps getting worse - it's usually accompanied by a drop in oil pressure also ... big end noise is a BIG problem - if you had it.

If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...
80% sure its exhaust leak.
Tappets are silent - cant even hear the little buggers. Im getting a new exhaust next week so i will get it clamped up and checked then.
The ticking is more at lower revs - and goes away once the turbo spools (obviously drowning/muffling it out?)
I think my big ends are fine - oil pressure hovers between just under half way and just over half way.
mandrel zorst here i come!
Thanks for your input spannercrab!

This noise is driving me insane. It fades away when I come on boost - But still its the most dirty horrible noise. Makes my car sound like its fucked.
Called an exhaust shop asked him if he could help - he was helpful enough to offer to find the leak for me....
But he wanted $1400 to do a mandrel zorst on it
bwahahahah

He reckoned he had to make new flange to run from the turbo $450..
Then $980 for the full mandrel system and "high flow truck muffler"
Ian Diffen quoted $420 with muffler and flange - full mandrel.
spannercrab - Could it be leaking head gasket? Could the head gasket of gone due to increased boost?
If this was the case - wouldnt i lose boost pressure? As it is at the moment, It will hold 12.5psi all the way to 3500rpm (if i give it some herbs)
What else should I look for spannercrab??
Cheers!

Leak
Ok - many of ther TD patrols I have seen/heard and owned have had same issue - its manifold leak - good way to fix was copper gasket sealant hey - fixed it good n strong.
My 3 inch zorst cost me 270 with all mandrels, and went of dump of turbo, no mufflers (turbo quiet enough without muffler.)

No - $270 was including labour and fitting from local shop. its 1 x 90 degree bend at bottom of dump - 1 slight press bend of 10 degrees to and=gle it up over the rear diff and 1 x 90 degrees to dump it over the rear diff axle tube.... that was it.... its out the way so won't hit stuff or get squashed in springs like stock ones, cheap n simple as. the bends are about $35 each or so and pipe probably 2 meters will be 140 I recon.... just easier seeing its his profession. No mufflers etc to pay for either and not too loud.

But it wont clear the longrange tank in the state its in. i had to but a few bends, etc and route it along the fuel tank and out the back. Its funnay how a 3 inch zorst will fit inbetween a 2 iinch body lift. Going to rub a bit on the chassis i think, But i might solid mount it and put in a flex join to take care of the vibration
gasket is cheap and easy to replace as long as studs dont snap..(shouldnt do)just undo and pull everything forward off studs..cleaning any bits off block and manifolds is the hardest bit (assuming the gasket breaks up.mine didnt.and i have reused it twice now)
you might get lucky and just find a loose nut or two and tightening them sorts it??
paid about $200 in uk for my stainless exhaust, mandrel bent, but i installed and cut and shut it up(and welded..) otherwise it was gonna be lots of cash..labour not the pipe is expensive..oh i made the turbo flange aswell.

Gee, that was a good price hey..... Didn't realise your beastie had a long ranger but.... should just dump it over the diff, at least you can verify no mufflers ain't noisy hey.
