I have a mate with a garrett T3 turbo with a .61 exhaust after ratio which he no longer requires. I Was wondering if these turbos are well suited to the td42 engine, and also would it be worth getting the exhaust housing changed to .82 ratio if I purcahsed the turbo. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

i used to have a high flowed T3 in my old comp ute

definately can recommend them

T3's come in the safari turbo kits ... :armsup:

do you know roughly what it would cost to hi-flow the turbo, and also how much does hi-flowing the turbo effect spool up times.

Remember that the "T3" specification is merely a cartridge size - compressor / turbine housings and wheels can be just about any combination of the above.

T28 and T03 are roughly similar in cartridge size (the T28 being slightly larger) - the T28 is typically used on RB25's as used in the Skylines - but this does not mean it's suitable for a TD42.

the .61 A/R is a good start in calculating suitability for the application - but this is only half the picture; you still need compressor sizing in order to calculate potential and max flow based on your engine size & determine if it's right for your application.

I also have the core part number, would this allow me to obtain compresser and turbine diameters in order to calculate the trim. Also if i do manage to calculte the trim do you know what area ratio is suitable for the td42

I would suggest that this A/R is a bit small for a TD42 - although that's not to say it wouldn't WORK - anything will work ... just a matter of how well!

Really for a TD42 you should be aiming for something around the .55 --> .8 range A/R on the turbine to achieve a good all round boost performance - tuned more toward the top end (from 2000 onward) - the larger the A/R, the more heat & gas it takes to spool i.e. higher RPM's - then it needs to be matched with the correct compressor.

The relatively small A/R will probably give you very fast spool up at low revs, then will run out of go before peak torque is achieved (around the 2-3000 RPM).

Compressor for a TD42 - from memory is the T3 Super 60 trim compressor ideally?
