Help, Hilux problem

Post by mugsy »

I have a 2000 hilux IFS and was doing some very mild 4wding yesterday (high range 4wd, hubs locked) and started hearing a knocking sound coming from the front end as I would speed up, I think it may be the hubs as when I unlocked them it stopped. Can anyone shed some light on this for me, and if its not the hubs, any other ideas?
Thanks.

You should listen to CV smasher, he seems to have plenty of experience if he's name is anything to go by!

Go for a drive with hubs locked, and when you go around corners with full lock, the CVs should rumble/rattle. If they do, their stuffed.

If the rumble/rattle happens in a straight drive, then maybe the CVs are completely smashed, or problems with the locking hub assembly.

If your mewchanically minded, pull the hub assmebly and wheel hub apart and look for broken bits.

Could also be broken teeth in the diff casing. Not the first time IFS front diffs have busted with easy off roading. Check your diff oil for grease and lumpy bits of metal.

Fingers crossed in aint a diff!

so if i have done a CV joint I would still be able to drive it home in 2 wheel drive on the black top with no noise or vibration? 4WD was still working when it started making the noise.... how much will it cost me to get the CV replaced? Could i do it myself?

Being an ifs model the front diffs seem to be weaker than the cv's
my bet would be that but could allso be a cv.
Have a look under the front & give the cv shaft a shake & see if
it feels a bit grindy if so maybe be a cv.
The ifs models dont seem to bind up when cv's blow.
SO this makes it hard to find out what went bang.

Post by GETNHI »

Would agree with Brad. I've blown 4 cv's. The 03, v6 with 33"s can't handle it. Learnt my lesson and booked in with Cheezy. Coils allround.Cheers Mick

GetNHi,
You got any pics of your SASed Hilux?
How much did Cheezy charge you for the conversion?

Thanks.

I didn't like hearing that last bit...

Mine did the same thing today.

4WD High/Low - knock that gets faster with road speed
2WD High - no knock

The front shaft spins fine, theres no play in it. The CV's are only new and when inspected from the outside by a CV specialist, they're deemed fine.

The ADD sound when ya click the 4WD button sounds a fair bit louder. When it happened i was going up a hill, the front hit a bump and it just made a whiring noise like a bit of plastic in the spokes of a bike.

Welcome to the broken diff club. I did mine last year, 16 teeth off the crown wheel, and 2 broken spider gears.

While it is apart, look at getting a diff lock installed, either auto or manual/air.

Made the world of difference to mine.

Cheers, Brad.

Yep I will put my money on a crownwheel too.
I have one sitting on my shed floor with a big section toothless.
