Ummmm not QUITE that simple mate..... I got a quote of around $1600 for a hi flowed turbo rebuilt but no idea on cost to do initially....
I noticed you seem to want to make the patrol go better/faster all the time as opposed to working on suspension etc (nothing wrong with that) with all the money etc - why not pull your TD motor, buy a conversion kit from ebay for $200 and get an LPG V8 from paper or wreckers/mates etc in her?????
the money you will outlay trying to get your TD to go faster will still not be anywhere near a V8 hey....
but the diesel is water proof if you seal up the air intake. V8 is only as waterproof as you make the dizzy, carby, ect. I will say the turbo is not the best thing to put under water but hey I still haven't fitted my turbo. A diesel won't ever have probs on inclines, on it's side or starting after a roll over. If the v8 isn't fuel injected it may have probs here while the deisel won't. I personally hate the ign., carb and all that tuning on a petrol motor but the deisel, tune it and it's set for a long time. If we compare milage the SD33 eats up the v8's, not sure about on LPG but for petrol definately. My 6L v8 chevy costs $100usd to fill and gets about 350 miles to the 33 gallon tank with no load. The 350 in my 94 Chevy has 140k miles and is still going fairly well although it does have a good sized oil leak. The 6L v8 in my 2001 Chevy has just clicked 90k miles and has zero issues and is going strong. The 6L is a much better motor than the older 350 and has tons more power. But then again it costs way more. The SD33 in my 83 MQ was rebuilt at 330,000km.
I think there is advantages to both, for off-road I choose a diesel....for anything on road a v8 rocks.
