do modern efi diesels need an electric fuel pump?

Got a toyota 1kz turbo diesel in my 84 lux. Runs fine but wondering if it should have a low pressure electric pump from the tank to the injector pump? Running a GQ tank where spare tyre used to be.

Modern efi diesels run higher pressures than their petrol cousins so you may need a lift pump and high pressure pump.

afaik (i'll have to go check the ute) they all still all run mechanical pumps which is more than capable of sucking the fuel from the tank.

the only times an electric pump is handy is if you suffer from fuel starvation under accelration (fuel goes to the back of the tank away from the pickup). then fitting an electric pump and surge tank is required.

some people fit small pumps because they suffer from fuel draining back to the tank (ie overnight) and can't be bothered fixing the cause.

1KZ's aren't really 'modern EFI' - but anyway no they don't NEED a lift pump but will benefit from having one.

Sorry 'ancient technology EFI' just trying to get the point across. So what type of pump is best and where do you get one?

i haven't done and i doubt i ever will. however most likely a low pressure pump designed for a carby motor would work ok. speed shops should have them on the shelf.

edit: get one that have a built in regulator eg 4 psi regulated pump.

I use a 6PSI pump on my 6.5lt. Not the most modern of motors but does the job. GM says the pickup pump is fine if it is running between 4 and 10 PSI.
