tansfer gears or crown & pinion
tansfer gears or crown & pinion
just went to a 4x4 place today to ask about R hoppers and price ,he reckon,s crown &pinion a better option and cheaper whats youre thoughts cheers ron
Re: tansfer gears or crown & pinion
My thoughts are he's full of shit. I can think of close to zero situations where re-gearing diffs will be superior to xfer gears.ronoor wrote:just went to a 4x4 place today to ask about R hoppers and price ,he reckon,s crown &pinion a better option and cheaper whats youre thoughts cheers ron
If you want to correct for tyres on road and dont do any off road work then yeah maybe diff gears. Though that's still going to cost you close to what xfer gears will be anyway.
Guess it depends on $$. u can get some cheap diffs sometimes. I could have got a pair of 5.12s for about 400 but did not get them as would not suit on road manners for 31's
Depends on how hard offroad u go. I have got 3.9s and 1L case with 31s. its fine for 90% of stuff i do. sometimes lower is better but $$ is a factor for me.

Diffs are going to cost you to have installed just the same as the xfer gears. If you want to do a rebuilt on your xfer with all new bits factor in an extra $300+ for parts alone. Diffs wont be as much in parts, but there are 2 of them, and it will almost certainly be more than $300, i'd be thinking closer to double that.ronoor wrote:Thinking about it not sure wich way to go if you go r, hoppers do you have rebulid transfer ? cheers
At the end of the day i'm sure diffs would be cheaper to do, but the xfer option is better value for $ IMO.
If you are pulling the diffs as well to install lockers, the diff gears may be a bit more worthwhile .. otherwise the T/Case gears are the go .. (you will still want locked diffs to go with your gears )

dif gears
just put 5.12 in but i also put lockers in as well paid $500 for two frount vit difs replaced the r/p in the rear and bolted the frount vit dif straight in paid someone to set the pre load on the pinions then put then in my self. for the price of s3 hopper you can put two difs with lockers in but don't you want to get anywhere in a hurry the car will ring it box off if your not running at least 32's and even then i would go 33's on the road but off road 32's are great. it all comes down to give and take s3 hoppers willo give you more crawling ablity but the locker get you further. one other thing put birfield rings on the cvs
if you want to spend money on stuff that wont break than go diff gears.my rule of thumb is if you have 31's or taller than 5.1 is the way.if you have a 1 litre transfer than you will need 4.6 diffs.had many customers go to diffs after blowing transfer and finding theres no warranty.they also reckon having the gearing in the diffs gives better performance.in my yellow thing with 5.1 diffs i only use dual transfers when i want to show off, otherwise she does everything in single low and 5.1's.

u talking about top speed or revs at 100.
top speed and zooks dont really go hand in hand.
Edit: mine sits on 100 at about 3500rpm. with 3.9s,1L case and 31's
