I pickup my new car (Triton) on Friday so need to grab the basics.

Is the "Just Straps" brand OK? BCF has a kit on special at the moment..

1. just straps is ok plus x 3
2. 9000 lb winch plus cable/plasma
3. 2 x snatch block
4. 4 x bow shackle
5. 1 x recovery vehicle

check the vehicle front and rear for proper recovery hooks (as i'm not familiar with triton's) If no front or rear recovery point get one immediately, then my top 10 (in order - my opinion only)...

1. snatch strap is a MUST HAVE item for any 4by (they're all good enough imho, they'll all break eventually, so don't go buying the dearest. as far as i know just straps are fine. supacheap have good blue ones for $70)

2. 2nd vehicle

3. vehicle jack, wheel brace + jumper leads

4. long handle shovel

5. 10m winch extension strap (for snatching over a long distance in conjunction with snatch strap)

6. winch (hand or mechanical)

7. tree trunk protector

8. cable dampner

9. rated shackles 1 x 4.75t + 2 x 3.25t

10. snatch block x 2

11. big-arce tyres, diff locks, grunty engine, a-frame susp, more straps....

There is a great roundup of snatch straps floating around here by Beaver Industries i think... Some straps did not meet thier ststed weight loads and broke too soon.

The best ones were the Kaymar 8000kg and Bushranger 8000kg, followed by OpLock Mean Green 8000kg and the SuperCheap 8000kg to name a few...
Note - The SuperCheap 9000kg strap went unrecommended by the test.

I have a Mean Green and it works great - no faults so far.

The main thing as stated, is to check for SAFE and Strong recovery points on your truck... not just using a peice where a shackle fits.
Snatching is very underestimated and puts HEAPS of forces on the components.

But... just go and have fun! Just Drive It!

tyre pump and gauge, not really recovery items cos your pressures should already be down

exhaust bag, i reckon these things are a total waste of money. I was gunna buy one a few years ago when they were first getting around. I thought try before you buy and the 4wd shop obliged. In his driveway i couldn't raise the body to full artic let alone get a tyre off the ground because of exhaust leaks. I then tried to lift his hilux only to find his exhaust virtually missing. I then reached the conclusion that they're a peice of shite recovery equipment

Drag chains are handy. forgot that one! especially for hand winching with a hi-lift jack and dragging logs for firewood.

slow witted mate, gotta have one. they go well in conjunction with a video camera. Keep 'em away from next item tho.

smart arse girlfriend, is there any other kind when it comes to 4bying? they keep you warm at night. And wash your clothes when you get home (i only wrote that to gain popularity with female OL members). Sometimes they prevent roll-overs by restoring testosterone to safe levels

i always take my snatch strap with is shackles and gloves in its own bag

air compressor and tyre guage - its a given!!

small T-handled shovel - so if u need to take a shit you can hang the roll of toilet paper off one side of the T

small axe - might be some small stuff on the tracks or help for a fire

small tarp - if u need to get under the car and the ground is damn dirty or to use as a screen on big water crossings or deep mud

some old towels - because i walk alot of things im uncertain of so they help keep the car cleen!!

some ropes - in case!!

tool box - just the basics any more needed and its past my capabilities

socket set - pulled my passanger seat out once to fit a 4m log in my bundy for firewood once

Feed part of the eye of strap (a) through the eye of strap (b) and bung a decent stick, etc into the part of eye of strap (a) that was fed through.

The stick shouldn't break and when you're finished you'll be able to seperate straps easily. You could even put some duct tape on it or something so stick doesn't fall out when straps are slack.

It's not good practice to join 'em with a shackle 'cos straps break and shackles become lethal missiles when they do.

see you have a '98 v6 triton.

I think things may have changed at mits over the last few years

I get a 5/10 warranty. I can assure you that I will have ANYTHING that is not 100% fixed under warranty.
