Turbocharging hilux and patrol n/a diesels

Post by -Mick- »

I'm in the market for a 2nd hand vehicle around the 18-20k mark at the moment so as you do I've made a list of 4wds that suit what I need. Patrol wagons, patrol coil cabs and hilux extra cabs come pretty high on that list (diesel ones) but they really need a turbo. No worries budget wise I can budget 15-16 for a good patrol wagon diesel around 1998 and then turbo it.....

But researching turbos on these vehicles I've read a lot of stuff that says turbos on the hilux 5L diesels are marginal because the bottom end is pretty weak. Same for the late model patrol diesels saying they have lighter pistons and are good at cracking heads etc so turbos are not always the best idea.

What do people reckon about this, any truth to it?

If I list the factory turbo vehicles that suit me I get defender (good truck bad reputation) and navara (dual cabs no tray space, single cabs are poverty pack!)

settle down I should have said..........

GQ coilcab. No factory turbos. Show me a gu coil cab for <25k..... not in my budget

5L non turbo diesels....... yes you can get factory turbos but they're few and far between and hold their value much better than non turbos. I'm yet to find a factory turbo in my price range and then I'm after an xtra cab which are rare enough to start with. Chance of finding a factory turbo xtra cab........ bugger all. So I'm looking at turboing a na diesel xtra cab.

Any sensible responses appreciated

afaikthere is no 5L factory turbo motors. most of the ones over here are 5L and the imports are often 5L-E.

double cabs do come in turbo deisel, eg 2LT, or the 1KZ-TE motor.

i think stock turbo mottors in single/extra cab will be few and far between unless someones done a conversion.

you can lightly turbo the 5L ok. most bottom end issues are often due to lack of oil changes or running crap oil.
