Diff Transplant
Diff Transplant
Hi all
Apart from air lockers or welding the centre, what other options do i have for the rear diff in a sierra?
I've heard that a CJ6 or CJ7 diff transplants are a good strong option.
am i being misled by this option?
Thanks

Re: Diff Transplant
what exactly are you trying to find out. In your first sentence you are talking about lockers then you ask are CJ diffs a good strong option. Strong for what? D you want more locker options or are you wanting stronger diffs or…?Pep wrote:Hi all

You start talking about lockers, then go to complete axle swaps. The DANA axles in cj6/7 i pretty sure are D44 rear and D30 front, though it might be a D44 front, which would be the better option anyway if you went the Dana route. As far as wheelbase goes, they are different, and why would if you were going as far as a complete axle swap would you not tailor the WB to what you want anyway. The trackwidth of hte diffs would prob be wider than the zook diffs anyway you go, Hilux, cruiser,MQ,GQ,dana or MOGS. Not that this is a bad thing. In regards to wheel offset, once you increase the size of your tyres, you have to change the offset to keep then out of the suspension/steering and to keep the scrub radius more acceptable, though it is also a easy way to get a few more inches width with large offset too.
Figure out what you want to know, why you want to make this change, how much your prepared to spend and what your want to achive with your zook. Then we can answer best for you

What is the best way to get both rear wheels turning, willing to spend $1500 or so, without having too many probs after
Ahhhh so you want locker info. Thats better. You price range looks good, so ARB air locker all the way.

This will depend on the load applied by either:Pep wrote:OK thanks, now what about axel probs with an air locker is it an issue?
Pep
a) tyre size. Larger tyres will apply more load to the axles. Plenty of people run 33's without problems on sierra diffs. (some run 30's and break diffs, see point b)
b) how heavy your right foot is. If you drive like a lunatic you'll break something.

Thanks
I'm currently running 29's but once i've put a 1.6L motor in i would like to run 31's and i try not to go too hard on the go pedal
(but sometimes that the only way to it up there)
OK it looks like an air locker is the way to go, thank you and sorry for the confussion earlier
I'll try to be more specific with my questions in the future
Cheers Pep

If you go to 31's with suitable gearing and a locker or 2, you wont need to be as hard on the go pedal as before. So much more control and traction available. You will love it.Pep wrote:Thanks
