Rebuild or replace.

The 4.5 litre motor in my Landcruiser is apparantly shagged. Needs big end bearings, main bearings, crank machined etc. As I've recently converted it to LPG, an reco head with hardened values might be an idea as well.

What I'm looking for is advise on either getting it rebuilt of getting something like a remanufactured HM engine. I'm not sure which is the better option. Rebuild is looking like it will be $3500 whereas HM want $5300.

I'd love to convert it to a V8 but I think that's going to be even more expensive which I really can't afford.

Just replace it with a patrol Other wise just ask yourself this one simple question. Are you happy with the performance of the engine that is in it? If not then replace it with something that will. Otherwise save the $$ and spend it on something else for your truck.

if you are willing to do the work yourself i recon you wouldnt be much over the 5300 got the hm motor to put a 304 in it

Ive seen low km motors selling for around the 2500 mark.Why not get one and put it straight in.Maybe even a 100 series motor which has about another 7kw.

I was thinking about that. I don't have alot of mechanical ability so most of fitting a V8 would need to be farmed out. Is there any difference in fitting a 100 series and 80 series 4.5?

I would choose to rebuild my own engine at a quality engine builder before i fitted any remanafactured engine, even if the rebuild was going to cost more!...

Ask the engine builder about head work and cams while it's apart, but as has been mentioned, if your after true performance it's either spend big or patrol up!

Emmo I would rebuild my own engine as well! in fact I am in the middle of doing it. At least if you rebuild your own you know extactly what you are putting back in your car.
Buy a gregoeries manual and do it your self it isn't that hard (especially if I can do it) there are plenty of people around to give you good advise if you get stuck.
my 3L cracked a head and with new head plus valves springs guides etc etc plus big end bearing main, bearings machining the crank the lot I could of got out of it for under 1600 but am replacing idler pulleys water pump and everything else for 1800.

P.S. if you need parts talk to the guys from Engine Australia cheapest I found any where for diesel enigine parts and where delievered the day after I ordered them.
