Firstly as mentioned previously I havn't bought my tyres for this event yet so I don't have a problem with that rule, but personally, I like the idea of not competing against vehicles with major modifications (OBC and Ateco style). As this will be my first (hopefully)winch comp I like the idea of a fairly even playing field within the vehicles. I am not a dreamer who thinks there won't be fairly powerful/modified beasts, but looking at some of the people and their vehicles that have mentioned about competing makes me wonder if it is even worth spending the money to get the vehicle ready and competing. There seems to be quite a few who are just using this event as another comp and not an intro into winch events. I know it will be a hard event and I am all in for that but not having sponsors etc I have to pay full price for everything and to get my trol to be competative against OBC and Ateco spec'd vehicles is huge dollars.

Don`t know if you are putting me or my hilux in this group of rigs and drivers but if you are here are somethings to think about. I have only ever entered 1 winch challenge as a driver and that winch challenge was canned after only 2 stages because of reasons I will not bring up. Also my hilux is built more so for doing slow work then for fast work, hell it still run leaf springs. So as far as winch challenges go niether myself or my rig have much expierance at driving in them. I have been the winch runner in the last 3 vic winch challenges.
Now like I have said before limiting tyre sizes does NOT!!!!!!!! make things cheeper it also doesn`t mean that rigs will be any less built. Just like having 36`s doesn`t mean you are going to enter Ateco or OBC. I never will as 1 I don`t have A pillar protection and 2 I can`t afford OBC.
Ruffy I have said it before that this rule does not effect me as I only run Q78`s. I can just see how stupid it is and tyre size limits in comps are like a pet hate of mine.
I can see some very valid points being raised with this issue.
But, i ask you all who went to last years event to take a good hard look at the vehicles which were entered.
If i am not mistaken there were some very high powered and incredibly modified vehicles. But when i personally questioned why they were able to enter in the event the response i recieved was that the drivers were inexperienced.
Correct me if i am wrong, but how is that an acceptable answer???
If a reasonably capable driver is at the wheel of a highly modified vehicle, doesn't that just add to their capability by aiding them even further and not actually testing their driving skills (that is what its all about isn't it). As compared to the same driver or an inexperienced driver at the wheel of a somewhat stock vehicle.
If the event is all about giving drivers experience, then give them the experience by restricting such things as engine capacity - but i believe the real challenge will be enforcing such restrictions.
As for the tyre issue. I still don't understand what difference the tyre size makes if an engine capacity is restricted. If you restrict the engine capacity of the vehicles then you effectively cap the tyre size. The maths will tell you that the bigger the tyre, the slower the vehicle; so what relatively smart individual would run 37" over 35" if their engine performance suffered??????????
If some idiot with a stock engine wants to run anything higher than 36" tyres then let them do it; the only person going to suffer is the navi when he has to get out and winch because the car's engine doesn't have the capacity to turn the tyres!
I'm of the firm belief that there needs to be some quite substantial rule maken with regard to the driver and vehicle competition history. I have always been under the impression that Vic Winch is an entry level event for competitors with little or no competition experience. And that the whole point of the event was to give them the experience and the confidence to progress into such events as the Ateco and OBC.
If this is still the case and this is the way the competition management are advertising it, then i think it is their job to make a decisive call about it and ensure that competitors and vehicles are all judged on the same scale and specifications.

This topic is really interesting and affects me greatly if I submit the entry form.
I did the VicWinch 2 years ago and although we did just OK on Friday night and Saturday, we were plagued with winch problems all of Sunday and DNF the final stages. Then I entered last year and the dizzy decided to pack it in on my way up to the event, so we didn't even start. I was hoping to have another go this year, but it may be out of the question given all the discussion on this thread.
I competed in the OBC this year and finished 21st so according to the VicWinch rules I am still eligible to compete, but I also understand that my entry may not be accepted because less experienced competitors will be given more priority.
I would also like to run 36" tyres given the big fat GU has less ground clearance than most vehicles, so a GQ on 35" tyres will probably have about the same ground clearance than my GU on 36s. Also, I'd like to buy one set only so I can re-use it for other events.
My navi has zero experience in winch challenges. Driving is less than 50% of the skills for these events. The navi plays a bigger role in winch challenges, but how will my navi gain the experience unless we do this sort of event.
When I competed in the OBC I was up against competitors with 5 to 10 years of competition experience, so by doing half a VicWinch and one OBC does'nt make me a seasoned competitor compared to the top class competitors. The VicWinch this year would be great to gain more experience.
There's a lot of BS in this thread about rigs with extra horsepower competing against entry level rigs. The stages are set up so that big horsepower is not an advantage. Mandatory winch points is a good example of that and the stages are so tight that the big fat GU is greatly disadvantaged (you can't go fast into a small gap between big trees). Teamwork, a good winch, good tyres and good handling play a bigger role than horsepower for winch challenges.

Has anyone actually gone to the trouble of measuring there tyres, cos I for one have and so has seirrajim. We both run 36" simex's seirrajim is on 15X10's mechanical beadlocks and i run 15x10's with secondairs and both our tyres actually fit within the specified gauge of 928mm by atleast 25mm. Seirrajim checked his at 22psi on his vehicle and i checked my sitting flat on the floor with 25psi. NO STRESS they fit "LETS RACE" and have a blast doing so.

I just went out to the shed and remeasured my tyres and at 22psi on the ground and on the car a 36' simex jt2 on a 15x10 rim "FITs" within the 908mm that you have specified, with a couple of mm spare. Ignore whats written on the side of ya tyres, I think those of you with 15x8's may have trouble, i don't have one here to measure but i'm pretty sure a 36 will crown a far bit on an 8" rim.

I measured horizontally, and maybe with the amount of weight reduction i've done with the grinder the tyres don't seem to bag out much at 22psi on 10' rims
