80 series Second Turbo light

Post by Toli »

Hi,

travelling to work the other day and crusiing down the freeway at about 90km\h and I noticed the second turbo light (not the on that comes on at boost the one next to it) start to flicker on and off. It was really quick like a couple of flicks on and off then nothing.

It did this a bit on the freeway on the way to work and I noticed it again on the way home so I thought I would keep an I on it.

It did it again yesterday and also on the way home. I noticed it only did it between 90 and 100km\h and only while cruising or accelerating not when backing off.

Once off the freeway I gave it a push through the suburbs to see if it did it a lower speeds in other gears and it didn't

I have not noticed a drop in power or anything.

Any ideas what this could be?

Didn't some of the cruiser models have 2 lights? I think pre 95 1HD-T's had them. A green one to say the motor was on boost at 2psi upwards, then a red one to indicate overboost at around 11psi?

If it is a red light coming on to the right of the green light, it will indicate overboost. The waste gate may not be opening as soon as it should. High load on a highway creates excess exhaust heat, which will spin a turbo harder, which may cause the overboost light to come on periodically before the wastegate gets to open.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I was under the impression that when your injectors get a little old and start to leak a little (incorrect spray pattern) it has the same effect as overfuelling, without the power increase. The extra fuel creates extra heat etc etc.....perhaps leading to your cruiser to overboosting.

Thats it your right. It is just flicking between 90 and 100 km\h. I went to 110 and 120 but it did not do it there.

It does not stay on just flicker, if you blink you miss it.

Anything else to look at? I will be getting the injectors done maybe in september. They were done about 60,000km's ago.

Anything else that could be causing it besides injector leak?

Yes it is an over boost light. And it is amber.
The tojo manual says only to return i to your toyota dealer

this is straight out of the manual:

Turbo Warning Light (1HD-T engine)

This light warns that thhe boost pressure in the turbo system is abnormally high.

If it comes on while driving, slow down until the light goes out, and have your vehcilechecked by yor Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE:

Never drive at high speeds or race the engine even after the light goes out.

It could be as simple as an air leak in the waste gate actuator line.

Toli,
a few years ago I was on a trip, 92 GXL 80TD 5hrs from home when my amber light flashed for a second, then again & again every so often, I rang my BIL who was a Toyo mech He said to sneak it home & if it stayed on, pull over, turn it off & ring him, that was a while ago, it got increasingly worse and I noticed other dash lights coming on faintly as well where you could only see them at night, now they all stay on as bright as bright can be 80% of the time I drive it... :bad-words:
I took it in to see what was wrong & I nearly had to fork out for a new alt, I forget who told me how to fix it but I have seen it on LCOOL since , http://www.safari4x4.com.au/80scool/tec ... ights.html
I just pulled the plug off the back of the alt, gave it a clean & put it back on, I have to do this every once in a while and also had to clean the earth strap..
its not only annoying but aparently, when its doing this, its not charging.
hope this helps…

Thanks for that Joombi. I have not had other lights come on but I will look at the plug on the back of the alternator.

This same thing happened to me with the alt dieing but all the dash warning lights come on like when you first turn on the ign to start the motor.

boost

Post by Toli »

Just an update, I drove the truck to work today and it did it again towards the end of the freeway. I will get some WD40 and rags to clean that plug on the back of the alternator at Lunch. When i drive home tonight I will see if it does it again.

So far I have not had any other dash lights come on, just the over boast light. It also does not seem to be getting worse.

Anyway if this does not work anybody recommend a Diesel Mechanic in western Sydney. i live in Glenmore Park but work in Huntingwood (near Arndell Park)

Well i cleaned the plug on the back of the alternator and it did not do it on the way home.

A guy at work has had a 90 model since brand new and he said the same thing happened to his. It is either the plug or the alternator on the way out.

Sometimes it the plug works a bit loose and the clip just has to be bent in a litlle so it sits tighter.

I will keep an eye on it over the next week and see how it goes.

Cheers all thanks for your help.
