Street tyres?

I did a search and that returned 50 pages of stuff and the bible doesnt mention anything as far as I can see.

Ive got 32 inch Mud terrains at the moment and Ive noticed they are crap in the wet on the street. They dont steer or stop well if your in a hurry.

When these wear out I plan to get bigger tyres so I imagine they will be worse.

What street tyres do people use? Are car tyres the ones to use or are they not up to the weight of the 4wd?

I will be towing the race car pretty regulary with the Maverick once its built so I would like to get some street tyres to suit and so I dont wear out the 35's.

Does anyone here run street only tyres? What do you use and what size are they?

Go to a supplier like widetread (lilydale/FTG) and ask about second hand tyres. They're constantly replacing the stock tyres (full roadies) with muddies, often on week old cars.

my road tyres are 37" claws. Drive to comps on 37" claws then change onto other tyres.

I've always wondered:

If i'm not fussed too much about road manners but wanted the longest life out of my 'roadies', would i be best off going for a shallow treaded roady, or a deeper treaded muddy (et's say bfg/mtr etc), or a middle-ground all-terrain. Let's assume for arguments sake they're worth the same - i'm only concerned with mileage.

i.e. does the deeper tread of a muddy offset the faster wearing rate?

its all a compromise. if you specifically want to get megga ks then get a very hard compound tyre. look forward to crap breaking and handling especially in the wet (when you need ur tyres the most) alternatively go super soft and get crap wear but excellent traction.

depends on your style of driving really. i get 35-40k out of my 35in mt claws, take me everywhere off road handle well on road wet or dry and i corner hard but wear quicker than most others though i couldnt care less about the last one as they do everything else to my satisfaction and truth be told i love getting new rubber.....

i believe pirelli scorpion are a good middle of the road tyre.

to answer your question: no i dont use specific road tyres.

i use them for onroad n lighter stuff and mtr's for the rest
mtr's are as good onroad but noisier and lots more $ to replace

I got DD A/T's atm and find that my previous re-tread MT's handled better than them on the road 1st day driving on these it was raining and I took a familiar corner at a familiar speed and got a bit perpendicular to the gutters ... have since adjusted my driving to suit

I had a HT/AT tyre on previously, and my new MTRs absolutely sh!t all over them for road handling... not even to mention offroad

MTRs in the wet on the road are awesome... but they do wear quicker than a harder road type tyre.. and are more noisy.

As said earlier, people buy new cruisers etc and put Muddies on them straight away.. see if you can pick up a set.. even eBay

I ditched my old HT tyres years ago coz I found my BFG muddies were sh!tloads better as a road tyre than the Bridgestone roadies. Having said that, I have been almost tempted to try a "car-type" tyre as a roady, just haven't got round to it yet.

I've got a set of 285 45 Scorpion Pirellies on 18 inch mags that handled awsome on the road and way better then expected in the wet. I've got a 2000 GU and really had to drive it hard in the wet to make it slide. Didnt have any hope sliding in the dry. Bought some 35 mtrs now so not using them anymore.

DUnno about car tyres really, But with road bikes, ya need to scrub in the tyres abit first or ya end up on ya arse very quickly indeed.

Some of the tyre dealers down my way have contracts with the car yards to buy the factory original wheels and tyres . These are usually swapped on purchase for upgraded wheels and tyre packages at the request of the purchaser.

The tyre dealers then sell the wheel and tyre package cheaper than retail and they are brand new.

The factory tyres are usually pretty good for balance and wear from my experience.

I bought 5 tyres and GU rims a few years for my Mav and I got them for $285.00 for the lot through the Nissan Dealer..but that was just a once off as the dealer had little idea as to their worth.

I later bought 4 new Toyota rims and Bridgestone duelers tyres 275 x 16 from a 100 series cruiser for $600 on ebay. The guy drove the car home and swapped them straight away. Sold the rims on ebay later.

You can have two sets of tyre rims for your needs.
