One of my work colleagues informed me that he is having problem with his early GQ. I told him to post the symptoms to me and I would post it on OL...can someone offer any assistance to this problem...He wrote:
"Further to our conversation the other day the problems are as follows.
The vehicle is a 1989 GQ Nissan Patrol manual 4.2 Lt Wagon. Petrol / Gas. Just under 250,000 Kms
The problems started as flooding with petrol when switching back from being on gas. If you didn't have a fair bit of road speed up to clear the motor it would flood and stall. It was then a prick to clear & restart. This was diagnosed as a faulty needle & seat which was replaced, fixing that problem.
It then developed 2 new problems, first the fast idle takes a long while to come off. This appears to be temperature dependant as if it is a really hot day the idle is fine. The colder the outside temperature the longer it takes the idle to come off.
The second is that it periodically will not idle on when on petrol. It starts and runs fine but just dies away and stallswhen you stop. This problem will disappear for a couple of days every now & then but comes back.
The truck has been back to the guy who did the needle & seat twice and when he could no longer help me, has been off to another workshop that was highly recommended by people at work. After this guy had it the idle problem didn't change but it ran fine on petrol for about 2 weeks then the idle problem came back.
The gas system is Impco where you switch to petrol and pull the cable out. Fuel filters have been changed and the pump is fine. It will tow the caravan at highway speeds fine on petrol so fuel flow isn't the problem.
I am sure that this problem must have happened to someone on OL and I would appreciate the advice...
cheers

Can you organise to clear my traffic history in QLD? License # 66181907
If so I'm prepared to help
Seriously though First thing to look at is a complete carby kit as gas will often dry out seals, gaskets, etc.

my TB42 runs fine onroad but as soon as i hit a few bumps offroad the idle goes up the shit, ive been told that its crap from the float chamber that gets into the jets. last time i just reversed a couple of plug leads and let it backfire a couple of times and it came good, im currently running some fuel additives to try and clear all the crap out.
