hey all

anyone know how hot the EGT will get on a gu runing
16 psi. Im buying a pyro gauge and want to get the rite
gauge for the job.

If your after a guage and pyro. Anything that measures in Celsius would be good.
Anything upto 700c would be fine, as as linc said anything upto 550c measured in the exhuast manifold (before turbo) seems like the max. Have seen higher on a GU though, but that doesent mean it was good for it.
VDO do a kit which seems like a good price. It includes everything you need except the hole in the dash to install it.
Cant find the quoted price but it was something like $207 at repco in Bendigo (quote over 12mths old now).

We run after turbo, using VDO unit and pyro kit, and dont see more than 500 deg c normally, unless pushing the speedo off the dial in the GU in 25 deg C + ambients, where it got to 600 deg C passing a road train last week on the Plenty Hwy while running 22 psi for the stoney gravel roads near Boulia, but generally over 25 deg c ambient hwy see's them get to 450ish deg C before the A/C cuts out, and the temp starts to rise on hills.

VDO Part No. for the black faced "Vision series" version is 310.159.

I bought mine on eBay from Denco for around $270 - comes complete with gauge, thermocouple, weld boss (if you need it) and 5m of compensating cable.

I ve always been led to beleive that a pyro always goes in the dump pipe.
So what would the diffrence in heat be between the exhaust manifold and the dump pipe.

Depends on turbospecs, dump size, but around 150 deg. celsius higher pre vs post turbo.

pre-turbo is considered more accurate, and 720* is considered safe max pre turbo.

This bloke http://www.thermoguard.com.au/ makes a nice digi readout EGT.

Mate of mine has a 4.2t and was worried that it was getting to much fuel as the piro was about 550 with no load and it didnt seem to have much go (14/18 psi i think)
When i looked at it the piro probe was in the exhaust manifold not in the dump pipe so that clarifies it all thanks.

Ive just fitted mine to the manifold, readings could reach up to 600/700c

Its a VDO 900c egt kit from Denco.

I found out the hard way that if the probe is pushed all the way in and touches the inside of the manifold it wont give a reading. Bout half way seemed perfect.
spose i should start reading distructions!
