Where to mount a UHF?
Where to mount a UHF?
Hey guys,
Thinking about buying a uhf for the zook but the problem i'm having is I can't seem to find a logical place to mount one. The closest i have come up with is directly under the radio slot but then it'll probably interfere with gear changes....Short of spending big bucks on a remote head Uhf to sit on the dash I'm running out of ideas....

All the radios i use are remote head so it makes it easier to mount.
I first had the head mounted to the ash tray as seen in pic 1.
Then ended up mounting the head on the dash
The main unit i mounted up behind the glove box.
If you need any more info or parts please let me know as i work in the industry and have access to parts and cheap antennas.
Cheers

Hookers are like bowling balls, You pick them up, put your fingers in them, then throw them in the gutter and they come back for more.
Hey there. the screen in a LCD touch screen that is connected to a laptop that is mounted behind the passenger seat. Since it is touch screen there is no mouse required.
I run at the moment oziexplorer on it but there is much better programs out there.
The screen is worth about $300 and the second hand laptop $400, The gps i am using is a garmin thats mounted on the roof and they are only $160.
So all up the system that i use cost me arond the $900 mark.
If you require any more info please let me know.
Cheers

Back to the two way mount...
the higher the better... i have had mine in a few positions, currently under dash on drivers side, bolted to bar that runs across. Has been in similar place on passenger side but took a bit of a hiding with passenger jumping in and out.
Operate by feel, but once fired up it stays on one channel, squelch and volume so no stress in not seeing the face, wired extra speaker for listening.
And yeah, nice looking setup with the screen... i got a laptop available for two hundred if ppl are interested.

I mounted mine the same as twisty, was real easy.
The GME tx3200 fits really good in the w/t models.
Just replace the original ash tray bracket with some steel sheet and screw the radio bracket to that.
If your lazy like me buy a 'make a bracket' from bunnings, only got to put one bend in it, the pre drilled holes line up perfectly.

my gme tx3200 is mounted on the drivers side, down low on the dash on the upright sorta panel near where your right leg is. Most of the time its great, but sometimes it can get in the way - but thats because im 6 odd foot tall.

Ive seen 84ZOOKSTA setup and it is quite impressive and works well. Overall it is a well setup rig with all the accessories and stuff. Just needs some lifted springs for better clearance for those tyres. But with a front locker it does really well as it is.
I would be interested in how much cheaper you can get uhf radio gear as id like to get a uhf with a built in scanner for listening to the authorities.

cant belive people mount electrics lower than the seats especialy on the trans tunnel water comes out through the gear leavers like a water feature in 90% of zuks. mine fills up within 5 mins virtually an inch a minute so try and get it up as far as you can on yhe dash is great but in sight of every body on the roof is the best out of sight out of mind

i was going to go 3 mm with some angle to mount it. (see old 4wd monthly mag they made one in there.)
i would mount it into the grab bar holes or something like that.. havent really gotten into it myself.. long weekend job maybe

I was faced with the same problems with fitting my Uniden in the Vitara, so I made up a roof console out of 6mm Ply and scrap bits of pine left over from the drawers I made for my long departed Prado.
I have no idea how to load pictures on here so if you wanted to have a look at how I did it, I can email them to you, just PM me.
It ended up being pretty easy. I'd imagine for a hardtop Sierra you could do the same thing, not sure about a soft top Sierra or Vitara though.
The hardest bit was covering it in the foam and roof lining to match the original roof. All up cost was $15 for the velour and foam. Everything else was offcuts or bits laying around.
It has ended up looking sort of like one of the "Outback" brand roof consoles (if you look really quickly from a long distance with your eyes half shut, squinting), as I also allowed a side entry space between the UHF and the centre roof light to be able to carry sunnies, my CD case and other bits like the Staun deflators. It works very well for me.
Anyways, let us know if you want to see it, or I could send the photos to someone else who could host them for me?
Cheers
