possibilties of a blower on a hde...
Moderator: Tiny
i've just done the conversion in this last week that i've had off (had to wait for the intercooler to arrive). already made the manifold last year before i left Qld and whipped up the dump pipe ect in the shed during this week off. was looking to have it all look kinda factory, thats why i need to modify the original air box and see if i can bolt it back on.
yea couple breaks ago i had the gearbox out to replace the throw out bearing, so i trial fitted the turbo while waiting for the throw out bearing to come.

indeed i did. and i wasnt disapointed.
we went out for mothers day yesterday (5 4wd's in total) to 11 Mile beach out of Esperance. it was much softer than the last time i was out there and the feroza pulled through the soft sand with more ghusto than it has before. it's only a litte extra power at the moment (cant expect much from 3psi and no a/f checking etc.) so it isnt a rocket ship.
but i can get it into 3rd gear (4wd low range) and power through the sand where normaly it dies in the ass and you gotta stay in 2nd revving the tits off it. enough extra power to get up some rocky ledges covered in sand was easier than last time out there for sure.
theres still a fair bit of mucking around to get it all sweet, still running a very restrictive rear half of the exhaust. and i have to do some die grinding in the dump pipe to get rid of some nasty bits of my welding.
i'll find out how it is on the hi way when i go back up to work for my 2 week swing on wedneday. 280k's from here to the camp is.... eep.
packed p ready to go home on monday morning.

hey guys. jus to let u kno ive jus finished doin my custom bolt on sc14 blower setup. wil post up pics soon.
no cooler yet jus tryin to run motor in first. factory computer but running a silicon chip cdi unit for more spark. also usin a t-pieced 1 way valve for d factory map sensor so it doesnt c shit it self wen it sees boost instead of vacumm. goes good from low rpm. wil tel more wen i upload my pics of build up k lads.

good stuff, cant wait to see the pics.
the factory MAP i've found will take 4.5psi no problems but as soon as i go just over 5psi the ecu shuts off. only momentarily though, as soon as i back off it's fine. i've ghetto rigged the turbo wastegate acuator so it opens at a low 3psi until i actualy get around to finishing the exhaust system and add another injector.
so far done 560k's of hard hi-way driving (up to work and back) and about 50 odd k's of street/town driving and about 15k's of beach bashing since i've had the turbo on and running.

at the moment it seems to be prity mch the same as what it was before i put on the turbo. maybe useing a smidgen more. what i really need is a wide band 02 sensor set-up and the 5th injector i want to add so i can roughly 'tune' it for optiman (well close as too) air fuel ratio which should then add to optiman fuel economy.

hmm car goes good minus d oil leakin cause the crankshaft seal has split itself. otha than dat d thing goes good. winds up nicely n goes good on d fuel too. also good dat d blower is on a switch so i dont run it al the tym.
but motor startin too feel a bit long in tha tooth near 200,000 so im lookin at rebuildin motor or buyin one dats got d work done to it already. yeah senergy would be nice to hook up again so il call u nxt tym i got sum tym off work n well meetup ok.

Fits in really well. Lucky you don't have aircon!
Were those lines off it in the pics oil supply lines- or does it have it's own oil supply?
Also, what sort of boost are you getting like that; and from what sort of revs is it noticeable?
PS: forget the intercooler- get a decent EFI system on there and then you'll really start getting the power...

i beg to differ.murcod wrote:PS: forget the intercooler- get a decent EFI system on there and then you'll really start getting the power...
any forced induction set-up produces hot air that needs cooling, no matter how good your fuel/ignition set-up is!

Yes, but your trying to run boost with an EFI system that isn't designed to cope with boost (ie. mixtures are all wrong); plus the timing will be all up the creek for the changes..... The result being you are missing out on power and risking blowing your engine. And don't forget this is on an engine that will readily detonate without any forced induction.tufferoza wrote:i beg to differ.murcod wrote:PS: forget the intercooler- get a decent EFI system on there and then you'll really start getting the power...

But hell, go the intercooler first and pump the boost up!

my system that 'isnt designed' to run with boost is doing so fine. neither of us can say if the mixtures are 'all wrong' as they havnt been tested yet with a wideband 02 meter under load. i'm sure if it was going to run that lean i would of melted a piston or blow my headgasket by now (touch wood *as i pat my head* ).
you would be amazed at how much cooler charge air can help in preventing detonation, which as we know is part of the parcel with in cylinder heat.
take the old school water injection for example, even on a naturaly aspirated engine it can allow for much more agressive timing to help produce more power as the in-cylinder temps can be lowered. good intercooling does this for boosted engines.
sure the factory fuel/ignition set-up can be improved on for better results with a aftermarket computer and larger injectors, it would be great. but intercooling has gotta be right up there with the items needed.
bah, i'm off to the wet mess for a beer, who's coming?
