CV + Axel how the $%#$ do you get them together?

hey guys.. ive been stuck this for the couple of hours..

how do you get the snap circle to stay inside the groove when you go to insert the axel into the birfield??!?! I've been trying to use a screwdriver to keep it in but it just keeps popping out the other side.. ARGH!@#$

i managed to do it without much fuss last night with the long side, but this arvo with the short side i just couldn't get it in..

i tried the ziptie trick and the hose clamp method without any success..

is there another trick to this that im just not getting?

I thought that every cv had a countersunk (or whatever its called) to help with the circlip.

don't particularly know 40's

but the ones I have done

you need to keep the pressure on the axle into the cv, then compress the clip both sides at once, while still pushing

not fun, 3 arms would be good

Ithe right tool to compress both sides of the circlip can help, but I used 2 screw drivers and a few choice words

yes there were a few times this arvo when I thought itd be good if i had 3 arms.. but unfortunately i dont have a helper today or an extra appendage. thanks for the confirmation that i was doing it the write way (applying pressure when installing)..

any other tips are more than welcome

make sure the groove for the clip is very clean, in case some crud is gumming up the circlip, and the bevelly bit on the cv is clean and smooth.

too much grease can "hydraulic" and prevent axle going in?

sometimes a tap on the end of axle is needed, but be careful not to damage splines.


In my younger fitter days, I leaned on end of shaft, leaving both hands free to work the clip.

some circlips have a wrong way up, making them harder to slip in, worth checking, but unlikely
