Well, your looking at 10-12 hrs from Newcastle to Brisbane Northside, then another 2-3 hrs to south end of Fraser.
Go through Brissy via the Gateway Motorway, then via Bruce Hwy (1) to either
Cooroy, turn right to Tewantin, left at Shell servo to Noosa River ferry, then up Teewah Beach, over Double Island Point to Rainbow Beach, then Inskip Point, then ferry to Hook Point on Fraser, (This trek is tide dependant) OR
Continue up to Gympie, then turn right just as you enter town, follow road to Rainbow Beach, then as above.

Quite a few established campgrounds on Fraser. Expect to be fenced IN, to keep out the dingoes. Plenty of toilets at established campgrounds, dont know about showers. Someone else will tell you.

3 days isn't really enough. even if its a full 3days at fraser. you need a week. how many going?
*edit* it does matter which barge you get on, cause they are not owned by the same bloke. support the locals use the manta ray.

Via Noosa is faster, it is 3-3.5 hrs via Gympie from BNE.

Fill up gas in Gympie or Noosa as it is cheaper than Rainbow. Orchid beach was $1.80/l when I was there last. (It's a long way from teh sealed road tho).

3 days isn't very long on Fraser :)

Waddy point camp ground have hot showers $1 for 3 minutes.

Theres fenced camping at Dundaburra and Waddy Point up top near the rangers station, the rest is open. Dingo's leave you alone if you follow the rules regarding locking your food up.

If you are going to visit Wathumba take aeroguard and apply it before you get out of the car, anywhere on the western side of the island really. Only been chewed up there once and we didn't see the buggers at all. Days of itching later I have learned.

Personally I like the top end of Ocean Lake camping area just a bit south of Orange Creek. There's some toilets at Ocean Lake which are always popular with the ladies (and when you camp at Ocean Lake they are easily accessable at high tide).

There is 2 barge operators, the Manta Ray is the best in my opinion. You will see it is the most popular. Both barge operators are not owned by the same bloke. Ask the Manta Ray guys the story behind it all :)

Do not pre purchase your barge fare for $75 in town (they'll tell you its better to pre purchase them, load of crap) and pay $65 at the barge itself.

NO!

Manta Ray is the one to use. All other barges ARE owned by the same bloke, the Manta Ray brought the prices down - after the original operator tried to drive him broke.

Use the Manta Ray.

Perhaps the mods could move to "General".............

How about including the whereis and nowwhereroute links in the links section under a new thread GPS/Navigation?

I find the best run is up the coast to gympie then to rainbow beach then catch the MANTA-RAY BARGE!!!! from inskip to hook point, 3 days is no-where near enough, a week minimum especially if your comming from Newcastle.

my $0.02

I went a few years back and i think i got on the ferry with the rainbow on the side because if you produced you ticket a eurong servo over there they would give you a discount on your fuel 10 cent per litre i think it was...
