No one I know still uses it, way too scratchy. Actually come to think of it, I have had one for about 4 years and have NEVER used it!

I still have one, but now mainly as a backup, and i couldnt afford a UHF until just recently.

As UHF is filled up with people chatting, people will move back to AM.
Cheers,
Dan.

Could be some truth in that, especially for vehicle to vehicle chatter, and leave uhf on scan.

As for dual am/uhf i don't think their that good as you can't scan/use both at once. It's either one or the other. a good uhf and a cheap am's the better option imo. (advice from a guy who has uhf only  )

Fitted a couple of the dual units to some logging gear a while back. Operators not at all happy with them. Too many limitations with them. These were the first of the Uniden AM\UHF units. They may have improved.

it was the uniden one i was thinking of getting.....
it compared well in price with straight uhf units and i figured i got to muck
around with AM as an extra, maybe get some ionosphere bounce. but i don't know if that'll happen on a 5Watt unit?

am is better in the bush as it will bounce through the scrub to some degree
where a uhf will not

Up until last year I had both fitted (for about 7 years), I can't ever recall a time that I actually used the AM set ...

Am

Post by cookiesa »

Still have it in the vehicle and occasionally sit on a nearby hill to have a chat with people further away. Although not "reliable" to call a particular person/area I kept it as I had it already and in the event of being up the creek without a paddle it may put me in touch with someone who can call someone else to help me out without resorting to the EPIRB. (Can't afford HF and Satphone at the moment)

Hopefully it remains being used just for chat!
